The BEST Japanese dining in Brooklyn!

I love this place, my Japanese wife loves this place, all our friends love this place, our kids grew up on this place, we don't go anywhere else for Japanese food in Brooklyn. The sushi is always perfect, the service is family friendly, the customers are local and wonderful. We have dined here at least 50 times. Never, ever has anything been less than outstanding.
- Pros: Owner (Osamu) is an amazing sushi chef.
- Cons: I moved 3 hours away.

Geido is one of the only neighborhood sushi joints that has the "authentic Japanese neighborhood" feel, that is very rare in NYC. Sushi in NYC is either fake or ridiculously pretentious and not affordable. As far as I know, born /raised in Japan, this is the only sushi joint that has the true vibe of a local favorite. I can stroll in and talk to the regulars at the bar and talk about basketball, baseball or any topic. I am very fortunate to live near this place because it rules.

Great sushi for an affordable price! The choice of rolls is somewhat limited, but the salmon sushi is melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Geido is popular and always busy, so be prepared for a loud dining room.

Geido is my favorite sushi restaurant in Brooklyn and in my mind, the all-time best baang for your buck sushi place in the tri-state area. Set omakase price is $25 dollars. The sushi isn't the freshest or the highest quality you will ever have, but the skilled knife-work, technical ability, and imagination of the sushi chefs make up for where the ingredients fall short. The head chef and owner is Osamu, a quiet, but cheerful, fun-lovin' guy who won't hesitate to drink with you (you will either see him behind the sushi bar dressed in white, drinking beer or as a bus boy dressed in black, drinking beer). The amount of sushi he gives you usually depends on how drunk he is. Get friendly with him and he's sure to pour you lots of free alcohol and put in the extra effort to give you special pieces of sushi. It really is a great local place with lots of friendly regulars who you can feel free to chat with at the sushi bar. It's like one big family in there (kind of like Olive Garden except the food is actually not made of dog feces and used diapers). Reservations are not accepted and wait times can get ridiculous during dinner rush. Therefore, visit at off-peak times only so that you can get a spot at the sushi bar (around opening time or near closing time). Be sure to tell the waitress and chef that you would like piece by piece sushi omakase and not omakase that comes on one complete plate. Actually, don't do that. You'll clog up the sushi bar and there will be less room for me.

Geido is the only sushi place I go. This place treats me like a king.
No attitude, no arrogance. I hate those "pretend-to-be-highend" Japanese restaurants in the City
Having lived in Japan for 10 years, this is the closest to what you get there.
Geido is the real deal and I will continue to go there as long as I live in NYC.

If you want the best sushi in town, head to Blue Ribbon Sushi. But if you want a nice casual place to eat really, really good sushi, head here. For $30 you and yours can have a really nice dinner out in a no-frills space staffed by extremely capable chefs and waitstaff. Having never been to Tokyo, I can only imagine that Geido is an authentic sushi dining experience. It certainly feels that way.

You know what they always say, "a good sushi restaurant is always busy!" Geido is always busy, so come early or prepare to wait. It is always worth it and always crowded. This is the most amazing sushi ever!!!! I love their sake selection and their dinners are great too! My favorite appetizer is the fried oysters. The staff is always friendly and helpful.

Geido is one of the few restaurants in the neighborhood which Japanese patrons in the know frequent. Almost all, perhaps all, the other Japanese restaurants in the area are run by non-Japanese (mostly Koreans), and its just not the same. A discerning Japanese palette can tell the difference. Geido is different. It's run by Japanese, and there you can find some authentic dishes you might not find in other Sushi places (such as okonomiyaki with Bonito flakes). It's not an "upscale" place, the decor is funky, the atmosphere is laidback, and yet it serves really tasty food at unbeatable prices. Undoubtedly, one of the best values while underappreciated - around. I recommend without hesitation.

I'm no sushi connoisseur, but the food there is so delicious, and such a good value. I don't live anywhere near the neighborhood, but I still go there every few months for the Chirashi box. Love this place. The staff is really nice, and the stuff painted on the walls is cute.
