Great Home Furnishings

by CityGirlShops

I absolutely love this place. There's an eclectic collection of things that always inspires me to do something unusual with my decor. I don't think it's the place to go if you're looking for something specific, but rather if you just want to find that one standout piece for your collection.

Moon River Chattel is such a feast, I featured it on my blog that captures the best of boutique shopping:

Not coming back.

by rodcid

I've been buying from this shop for many years, back in the day when its owner use to deliver stuff himself, as he did with this beautiful antique chest of drawers that I purchased from him about 6 or 7 years ago.

Last week my wife and I got a few things for the bathroom and also a lamp shade that was on the SALE pile. I took the shade home only to discover (after removing the more than 10 yards of cellophane-type clear paper that was wrapped in) that the shade was dinged ALL-OVER. I'm not talking one or 2 little dings, I'm talking dozens. tBasically, the shade was garbage and i couldn't have used if I wanted.

A few days later I took it back and explained how I couldn't see the extent of the damage since the cellophane paper completely masked it. They would not want to hear about it. They said it was a FINAL SALE and there was nothing they could do.

Now, I understand the nature of a final sale?you buy it, you keep it. However, there's something to be said about honesty and integrity that Paul and his stuff don't seem to understand. As a long-time former flea market vendor myself, that dealt exclusively with "seconds" of different levels, every time i had a "final sale" I would make it a point and make it clear that the item people were buying was damage, show them said damage, and THEN proceed with the sale if the customer was happy regardless.

At the store, I never thought the shade was damaged. There was no sign anywhere that indicated the item wasn't perfect. At no point the sales person nor the manager of the store mentioned the shade was in terrible condition. So my assumption (and my mistake) was that these items were overstock that needed to be rid of.

I would have been happy with a store credit, there are so many things here that I love to bring home. However I can't see myself coming back here ever. Too bad we loved their dinning tables! But they're dishonest and will take you for a ride if that gets them a buck.

Never again!

  • Pros: Great items for the home
  • Cons: Horrible service, dishonest (see my review).

Worth the Walk

by beeinthecity

i only hesitate to write a rave review because i want to keep it all to myself. i love this little shop by the water. great housewares, a well chosen selection of soaps & candles, plus random vintage furniture. i would live there if they'd let me. it's a bit out of the way but make the trip. you can eat at aurora, also fantastic, which is next door if you get too tired.

  • Pros: cool finds, great atmosphere
  • Cons: bit of a walk and a bit pricey for those on a budget

A country store for your apartment or building rehab project--in the big city of Williamsburg.

by Contributor

In Short
A mercantile in the old-fashioned sense of the word, Moon River stocks thousands of antique housewares (linens, dishes, kitchen items, tin toys, books) and antique furniture from the early 1800s through the 1920s. Some items are reproductions of old-fashioned objects, but most are original. A hidden treasure, the store is the kind of place you'd expect to find in the Berkshires, but are happy to see on the industrial side of Williamsburg.

Wonderful store - hidden away

by sirenanathalie

This store has a wide well selected range of retro housewares, boutique items, planters, and hygene items. French country meets American retro. I have bought some great casserole cookware at really great prices. I drool over there Vintage refurbished stoves. I find it a mecca for shopping in Williamsburg. Their tiny childrens section has some wonderful childrens classics. Hard to resist not buying something. Service was great. They leave you alone! If you need help they are very, very attentive. A Dreamy homey store.

  • Pros: Retro kitchen, housewares, country style
  • Cons: hard to find

Horrible Service

by lisel001

I spent a ton of $$ there, but the service was so horrible that I will never go back. The owner/salespeople were rude and condescending. It's really unfortunate.

I want so badly to love this store...a combination of great new housewares (candles/decorative items etc..) and architectural salvage furniture pieces. However, the service is horrible! I am never going back!

  • Pros: Nice items in stock, Reasonable $
  • Cons: BAD Service
