There are shortcomings but still my fav in Brooklyn

by danambo

The food is a little too expensive and sometimes the service isn't stupendous, but when I'm thinking of a place to go in Brooklyn and want it to be a nice night out, I always think of this place first. The decor is my kind of thing and I like that it is dark and always lively. The food is usually really good.

  • Pros: varied quality menu
  • Cons: a little pricey

Rude service

by i222

I usually try two times or three times a place before making conclusions, but unfortunately Diner fell down my expectations. The food was good, however service end up making the dining experience poor. Hopefully you may get a different waiter but the black curly hair waiter that served me that night was awful. He was rude, and not polite at all. Hope you guys get better servers...

Definitely hit-or-miss, for food and service

by michaeligor

I had mussels and fries here not too long ago - the mussels were maybe a 3 out of 10 for freshness and preparation, and the fries were cold and soggy. Seriously, it seemed like it was the first time the cook had ever attempted to fry potatoes. Very disappointing. The brunch menu is kind of limited and not terribly brunch-y. It's a cute spot though, and we've had a few good waitresses here.

  • Pros: good bloody mary
  • Cons: specials, most of the food, just doesn't seem like a very 'happening' place

A little overrated diner in Billyburg

by the_zeeman

I've been here several times, and it's hit-or-miss depending on the specials. The steak and fish dishes are fairly good. However, the cuisine gets into trouble when they attempt complex dishes, e.g., pork belly, bizarre soups, cassoulet, etc. They also tend to buy one vegetable for the day and put it into EVERYTHING. Today was zucchini. I love zucchini, but come on. It's summer...

There is a heavy and overly rich aspect to the food. The wine selection is decent, but overpriced, especially for Brooklyn. As for the service, many of the servers are nice, but a lot are uninterested. They like to write the menu on the paper table cloth, but they won't serve you bread or pay much attention, even if you ask for things several times. Today was the day they had no bread, but didn't tell us. It could be the hipster stoicism. All in all, it's a pretty good place, but mostly because there's little competition in the area. Try Dressler down the street for a comparison. Z

  • Pros: Good location, fun, decent food
  • Cons: Spotty service, slightly overprice and overrated

Hipsters ride high at this gathering point for Williamsburg's romanticized rebel set.

by Contributor

The Scene
The dark refurbished 1920s dining car hosts plenty of hipsters in carefully selected thrift-store clothing. They come for Caroline Fidanza's seasonally inspired daily specials and menu of bistro basics such as mussels, hanger steak and burgers. It's as much about the drinking as the eating, and eclectic locals crowd the bar stools while sipping classic cocktails, beer and champagne; tables along the windows accommodate small groups.

WORTH THE WALK

by franela

We decided on a Brooklyn expedition for my husband's birthday and under a friend's suggestion we headed towards DINER not knowing what to expect. Walking under a gorgoeus full moon, with the magnificient view of the Williamsburg Bridge behind it, suddenly, there it was.

Let me warn you that the little corner structure may set some doubts in your mind, but believe me, ignore themand keep on going. We walked into this funky little space that immediately put us at ease.

Love the male staff's lumber looks and the writing of the specials on the paper tablecloth.

And then of course, the food. The food is absolutely delicious, found the appetizer's a bit small though, but worth every last bite.

The only thing that disappointed me was the flourless chocolate cake.

I invited a friend out for his birthday and he chose this place: the restaurant itself is pleasantly seedy and the customers were all very friendly as we waited for a table. Everyone told us to order the cheeseburger and fries, which I did, while Birthday Boy and his lady ordered a special (chicken). Must have been an off-night, ?cause we were all disappointed: both burger and chicken were dry ? to the point that one got tired of chewing. To make matters worse, the service was lousy: after living in New York for 12 years, I?m used to this, but bad food makes one lose patience...

  • Pros: Very cute space; friendly crowd
  • Cons: Bad food and bad service
