Excellent
by Peter M
I have read some bad reviews about Peter Lugers and was a bit apprehensive. It was many years since going there my first time and I was a little young to really remember what it was like. I like a good steak and Peter Lugers has it. I do a lot of traveling around the world and will say I have had better steak. This is mainly because the Filet Mignon is my favorite and they are noted for their Porterhouse. The steak was done perfectly the way we ordered and the German Potatoes and the Creamed Spinach were very good. Before dinner I had a couple of cocktails which were superb. As for the staff, I found them to be friendly, helpful and, all and all, quite good at their job. It was a bit bright for me as I like a little more mood to the atmosphere. An absolute great place to go with your buddies for a steak and drinks.
- Pros: Steak, Drinks, Service, Time waited for seating.
- Cons: lighting, very bright. better for hanging out with buddies.
Worst dining experience on any continent
by shelleyfoster
They deserve zero stars, instead a black hole, as this was the worst experience I have had at a steakhouse let alone a restaurant anywhere in the world. The menu was limited, the steak offered was only porterhouse and served in bulk, so must be done to meet all diners’ needs. It was fatty and chewy and tasteless and drenched in oil. The vegetables were no better. The famous 'German' potatoes were left over hash browns at best. The waiter who served us, was a savage, he servied me by moving my hands out of the way with a knife and serving spoon to get at my plate, cutting my knuckles. After rushing us away out immediately after eating, they did not accept a credit card, and the debit machine was (as others have reviewed) was not working, which embarrassed both of the men in our party as they had not told us prior to seating the limited payment method, hence they were sent to the bank machine like criminals for cash, while the restaurant held me behind for ransom. During my hostage taking I asked to speak with the manager, and on complaining to the manager saying politely this was the worst experience in fine dining I have ever had and explaining how embarassed I was, rather than receiving an apology, I instead was scolded. To quote the manager "most leave saying it's the best meal I've ever had', perhaps this is so for the odd savage that stops in. This was the word experience and cannot be rated well by savvy New Yorkers nor international guests who have dined the world, this is the absolutely no better than a road side diner with cranky bad service, bad food, and a horrible attitude. They do not deserve your business. In fact charging 300+ for four to dine on cheap California wine, gristly steak and overcooked potatoes with offensive and aggressive service is nothing short of robbery.
- Pros: none
- Cons: Horrible service, poor qualilty meat, diner atmosphere
Not worth the trip
by TedSTL
On my recent trip to New York I made a special trip over to Brooklyn to visit Peter Luger. Arriving right on time for my 10:45 reservation the door was locked. The bus boy wouldn't even let us in to talk to the manager about their error. When the manager did come out he apologized and said they had already turned the broilers off so that there was nothing he could do. By the way, they had confirmed the reservation twice by phone.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Poor Organization
WOW (BEST PLACE YET)
by Sunshine22
It makes sense why this place has so many excellent reviews. Loved it so much, can't wait to go back. The service was amazing. Very friendly place. The whole experience was so delightful. See you soon peter. I would give this place 10 stars if I could.
- Pros: Best steak I ever had in my life.
- Cons: 0
Nast y host, overrated food
by pharmachick
We made a reservation 4 weeks in advance, it took 45-1 hour to get a table. The matrede Alex was extremely rude, obnoxious, unapologetic, mean.....definitely not a good start to a nice evening in a well knowns place. The food is overrated - I have had many steaks that were 200% better in the past, the waiters are abrupt, quick, you feel like they are trying to chase you out form the place. Not a clean place, not a smile in the room from staff...this place needs to go. There are so many other places in Brooklyn or NY City that would treat their customers so much better and you will get a much better meal for much less....AVOID THIS PLACE! NVER AGAIN!
- Pros: Location
- Cons: Rude matrede alex, waited 45 min with reservations
The food is below average
by Marishka
This place is sooo brutally overrated! The food is just average, the menu is very limited. Their service doesn't leave you feel like a valued customer to say the least....Dinner for 4 cost us about $700 (cash only). Nothing special, extremely uninviting atmosphere....Huge disappointment!
- Pros: N/A
Dirtiest Kitchen I've ever worked...
by Annonymous1224
Waiters grab raw bacon with their bare hands and continue to work without washing their hands. Steaks fall on the floor and get thrown back on he grill. Burgers are kept unrefrigerated throughout lunch hours. 12 to 4. Bacteria builds up and multipies every half hour and excrete all over your fresh burger. Creatures are plentiful in the storage area. Raw meat is left on trays that waiters clean the tables with. The worst is that gross bucket of dirty still water they keep in the dinning room to "clean tables with". Rude, Dirty and Gross. Save Yourselves . Goto a diffrent steak house.
- Pros: Coffe/ Ice Cream
- Cons: Dirty,Rude, dirty inhabited storage area.
The bacon was so good!!
by LivinginNYCsince2002
I have been to this place for four times because it is so famous and outside visitors always want to go there. I don't know why but men just love this place...My husband love it too. To me it is not a special place at all. O.K. steaks, poor service, no table cloth, casual atmosphere, rude telephone operator.... The tomatoes of tomatoes and Mozzarella had no taste but just so big. Well but the bacon is thick and delicious!!
- Pros: juicy thick bacon
- Cons: too casual
Another must stop in NY, Well worth the trip to Brooklyn
by GreatNightOut
Following the guidelines of previous reviews, we ordered the creamed spinach, grilled bacons, and the porterhouse steak for two. The bacons were amazing; like a ham steak. One is enough per person, unless you?re really hungry. Spinach was so good. You have to try it to believe it. The steak arrived medium rare, all well cut in a sizzling plate. One of the best steaks we?ve ever had. Even the service was top notch: friendly, speedy, and attentive. Well worth the money, the scary trip, and time. Reservations a must.
- Pros: Steak done right, creamed spinach, bacon
- Cons: No credit cards, must carry cash through questionable area.
Yum!

I'm not huge on steak (I'm one of those that orders their steaks well-done) and I don't normally eat out at restaurants where entrees are more than 20-something bucks. I've been to Peter Lugers 3 times. The first was for dinner, I had a steak, it was awesome. The food was tasty and the waiter (Horst) was very nice. I went for my sister's birthday and while I did enjoy it, I probably wouldn't go back for dinner anytime soon...If I were a big spender and steak eater, I'm sure I would go back more often. I do have to recommend the bugers that they serve only for LUNCH. They're about $10, throw in a side to share, a couple of $4 cokes and a dessert to share (plus the Shlaag!) and you've got the best meal ever for under $30! It's totally worth taking half a day off of work to do lunch at Luger's (no reservation needed). The shlaag does not get enough credit on this site. It's this German whipped cream that they serve on the side when you order a dessert and it is divine. If I could go just for the shlaag, I would.
- Pros: Burgers at lunch
