Natural Hangout
by potoch
It's not become a trendy, pretentious Brooklyn coffee venue—Tillie's remains to be a welcoming place for everyone from overworked Pratt students to wise locals who have seen Clinton Hill change over the years. Overall, an open-armed establishment that everyone can call home.
- Pros: Central location, delicious bevs, nice windowseats
- Cons: Service can be slow sometimes

Fort Greene is popping with new cafes trying to get in on the scene. Tillie's is the scene. Nothing fancy, just good coffee, tea, and snacks (from meat to vegan) and a great place to read, chat or work. Art on the walls rotates generally among local Pratt-affiliates, open mic nights are friendly affairs when the place would otherwise be dead, and the bulletin board is really used by the community. In a great move, wi-fi is free but plugging in isn't allowed so everyone gets a chance and no one sets up shop all day.
If it's crowded, split a table with a stranger. Share the Brooklyn love.
Yeah new bike racks on the Vanderbilt side!
The Fort Greene cafe where locals go to finish up that freelance project, or just to meet the neighbors.

In Short
Tillie's has been a neighborhood hangout since 1997, when it converted from an antiques store to a cafe. More than just a coffeehouse (although all the requisite coffee, espresso drinks and teas are vailable), the space has local art on the walls and hosts local bands on the weekends, open mic nights, and even a salon series. Free Wi-Fi draws out the neighborhood freelancers who spend the day nibbling their way through breakfast and lunch items, plus smoothies and desserts.
So so coffee but fantastic desserts & snacks

This place is a great place to people watch. It also has free wifi (but make sure you have a lasting battery or a spare b/c there's no place to plug in). They have GREAT desserts including lots of vegan options, great snacks and vegan sandwiches. Their espresso drinks are pretty crummy usually. They are either weak or bitter and some of the staff are rather uninterested. It's got a lot of good reading materials and art, good people watching and an outdoor spot too, so it's a good place to go. Unless of course you want really great coffee.
- Pros: Good desserts, good snacks, art, reading materials, free wifi, people watching, outdoor seats
- Cons: Not so great coffee drinks, sometimes rude staff, no place to plug the laptop in
