I love it!!!

by NorahM

The service used to be lacking, some of the staff was even rude on occasion (they are gone now)- I agree with those reviews. BUT... All of that is in the past! I am so grateful that our adorable little hood has this yummy juice bar. I go there all the time. The new staff is super friendly (Eric and that other Spanish speaking guy whose name evades me - they are really wonderful and generous souls) and the chai is delish. I am trying not to eat all those delectable muffins and treats because it's that time of year, you know?

Anyway, I highly recommend the brazil nut chai, tempeh sandwich, muffins, and the tropical smoothie. And I recommend that you stop by there!!

  • Pros: delicious food
  • Cons: sometimes there is a line

Great Menu, Appalling Service

by pronoia

The coffee is out of this world, as are the juices and smoothies. I also love the sandwiches and freshly baked wheat free muffins and cookies.

But I will not go there anymore because I am tired of being treated as though I am invading someone's personal space.

Which is too bad because I am the kind of person who will go out of her way to support local sustainable businesses, even if it means that it costs me a bit more.

  • Pros: Well made vegetarian food which actually tastes good!
  • Cons: The people who work their either hate their job or their fellow human beings. Hard to tell.

Greatest food; very customer friendly

by meemsy

You can smell their baked goods from blocks away. Walked in there one cold day with a bad cold - staff immediately offered sympathy and a hot ginger lemon drink they called a cold buster. Then I had a bowl of root vegetable soup and a home made jam cookie. Both were excellent, especially the cookie (not too sweet). Amazing, creative menu, locally grown. All in all - Super good food and very friendly service. A lot of people were in there that day - they make everything fresh so it takes time, but they seem to be learning how to handle the crowds. You should go in just to see how the place is designed - all the wood work is recycled from an old church. Tables are made of old blackboards. They get their electricity from wind power and try to do the right thing with everything. Organic all the way, and fabulous. Thoughtful, home made food thats good 4 you. Clean, fresh and homey atmosphere. Go find this place!

  • Pros: Quality of food; flavor; friendly staff
  • Cons: Parking hard to find

Appealing menu, Disappointing customer service

by infinitme1

After checking out the menu at Urban Spring, I soooo looked forward to having a freshly made smoothie and enjoying any of a selection of vegan treats not shipped from out of state until I experienced the frigid reception of the workers. Even though there were NO other customers in the store and no one even greeted me. The woman was all indignant when I asked about a grain on the shelf - which she wrongly identified. When I tried to pay with a debit card, it would have been nice (and customary) if the woman had at least suggested a nearby ATM - especially since it was raining ice outside. Finally, there was nothing in the way of a "thanks," "have a nice day," or "stay warm." I left wondering who these people were who could be so connected to the earth yet so disconnected from people.

The smoothie was OK, I only remember that it had cacao and coconut milk. The cookie - it had goji berries, pumokin seeds, oatmeal (if I remember correctly), and almond - was pretty good. But, I've been eating vegan and organic for years, I - or anyone else with eyes and a couple of taste buds - could figure out how to make them at home. Anyhow, when I Ieft to get cash for the ATM, I was so tempted to just go around the corner to Smooch and forget about paying. I did pay; but I doubt they'll ever get any more money from me.

  • Pros: organic and local ingredients
  • Cons: anti-customer service

Great food - healthy, fresh & delicious. Friendly service and cozy atmosphere. I love their soup and muffins.

I feel good about going there because not only is the food good but they are devoted to green/sustainability. The people who work there really care about you! The baked goodies are the best, but the sandwiches are also very interesting and tasty.

  • Pros: Fabulous food that's good for you. Cozy atmosphere.
  • Cons: Too small - they need more space!

Best Coffee in NY

by karmabuena

I know this is quite a claim, but I am quite a coffee buff, and it happens to be true. When I was there last the coffee was roasted a only a week before. It is organic and roasted in a brooklyn brownstone!!! You will not be disappointed!

The coffee may be black, but everything else is green at this veg-friendly cafe near Fort Greene Park.

by Erin Behan

In Short
Perhaps no business takes Fort Greene's environmental sensibilities to heart quite like this cafe. The thick moldings, church pews and ballasts that overload the space were rescued from Washington Square Park's "Peace Church." About 95 percent of the ingredients in the juices, smoothies and sandwiches are organic and from local farms. Forget V-8, hardcore veggies have the green power smoothie, which is $7.50. The commitment to sustainability extends to the packaging, which is all biodegradable.
