Disappointing
by inspectorjimb
I've been to this place twice and have been disappointed twice. The ribs are just god awful. They charge by the pound so a half wrack (this site won't let me spell it correctly, apparently that's a naughty word) of ribs is around 35 bucks. They are the full rib cut, not the st. louis cut and I don't know if they are even bbq'd. There is no smokey flavor and the meat is very tough and chewy. I stopped eating them because I got tired of wrestling the meat off of the bones. The brisket is 85% fat, which you pay for because of the by the pound pricing. The baked beans were mediocre at best. The spicey sausage however is fantastic (I'm geussing they don't make it there, I may be wrong). The whiskey/scotch selection is also very impressive.
If you do go, go on a weeknight and then plan to wait in line and fight for a seat. Avoid the ribs and brisket, get the sausage (at a couple bucks a link you can't go wrong) and maybe some pulled pork (have yet to try that). If you're looking for fantastic BBQ however I would recommend getting on the L train and heading into the city. You can find far superior BBQ in the city for close to half the price that you would end up paying here.
Overall I would say this place isn't worth the lines, waiting for seats and insane prices.
Great BBQ, Super friendly service, Nice place to hang out

Went here for the first time last night with a friend and my wife. The brisket is amazing and so are the sausages. The atmosphere is extremely casual but the place is designed with a great sense of style and consistency. The employees were all extremely friendly, patient and helpful and the barman really knows his whiskeys and doesn't mind helping you to make a good choice.
Only cons: BBQ has to be accompanied by home-made corn bread for me which they don't have. Your clothes will smell like bbq pretty severely, even though the place is ventilated probably as well as it could be and it doesn't bother you while you are there.
- Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere, Whiskey
- Cons: No corn bread and somewhat stinky clothes ;)
Awesome BBQ in an equally awesome neighborhood

Best BBQ I've had since moving to the city. The quality of meat is second to none. Apparently, it's shipped from some special hippie farm where they treat the animals nice before they slaughter them. Beer is served in giant jars which is kinda fun.
- Pros: Meat is high quality, atmosphere is awesome
- Cons: Overeatting is common

- Pros: Casual, Fun, Great Food

BBQ! Picnic tables!
by tarynbeatty
My friends and I would go here in the summer and grab a picnic table and sit for hours stuffing ourselves and drinking. IIf you want to sit outside, get here by 7pm because the table turn over is slow and you'll need to get here before the dinner rush. Once you land a picnic table, you head inside to fill up your tray of the delicious bbq. Our favorites are the pastrami and the beef ribs. The BBQ sauces are uninspired but the meat is so tender and delicious. I wish the potato salad was more mayonaise based...but the rolls are soft and perfect and the baked beans are great. Its gluttony at its finest and very worth the happy bloating afterwards!
- Pros: amazing pastrami and beef ribs
- Cons: hard to get a picnic table outside in the summer
Get there early
by bunnytummy
I read that this place was open till 4am, so I headed over around 11. Unfortunately, the menu is shortened to three choices "after hours": pulled pork with a bun, a sausage with a bun and beans, all served in small portions. You can't order your meat by the pound "after hours". The pulled pork lived up to its reputation. There was no sauce on it, but it didn't need it, and after tasting it i totally ignored my sausage - it was so good. The beans had alot of flavor, and there was pulled pork and sausage in there. Yum. I'm not much of a bean person, but I got it because it was recommended and wasn't disappointed. The portions were way too small, though. 20 minutes later when I went back for seconds, the "after hours" food had run out. Someone told me to get there around 5:30 next time - but what's the fun for gorging yourself on meat at 5:30? I wish they kept the meat coming late.
- Pros: food, interesting decor
- Cons: Bartender was snippy, food ran out
Its a fun experience

Alright! This place is a ton of fun, even if the food is sort of lacking. I agree with the fatty cuts of meat - my ribs were tasty but mostly inedible. The pulled pork was fantastic though, absolutely my favorite. I enjoyed the baked beans very much, lots of meaty, smoky flavor. The potato salad was good but it would have been much better if it was so cold, I couldn't exactly taste it very well. The brisket was a lovely cut of meat but a tad tasteless. All the spices on all the cuts of meat were underwhelming. I wish there was more differentiation between the rubs and explanation as to what what they were - sweet, spicy (no), heat - all of the above? I would have liked the ribs to be sweeter since I THINK that's what they were going for - I could taste it, but it wasn't there just yet. Don't let them force you into getting more food: "That's not enough for two people...." It was enough for the two of us, and we would have gotten more if we weren't so stuffed and happy. I did not leave room for pie!!! Oh, and the prices were very affordable - the two of us had 3 meats, 2 sides, a few beers and we spend around $30. We did not partake in any of the whiskey (we had a rough night previously). I'll definitely go back, the atmosphere was right on (for me), the beers on tap were all delicious (and you get to chose your size so you can taste more than one), the decor was thoughtful, welcoming and clever, the staff was good (bartender could have been in a better mood), and it was an overall fun dining experience. I just wish they gave you cornbread (with honey) instead of a bland roll. Nice place, hope it continues down the right path. Good job! We were there at about 7pm and were not denied anything. The place was pretty darn full too. Will they be open through the winter? I can see myself on a brisket and baked beans run during a blizzard.
- Pros: fun, good food, great atmosphere, nice prices. It can be romantic if you want it to be.
- Cons: no corn bread? what's the deal?
Best BBQ in NYC
by scootercrash
Seriously, I don't know what the negative reviewers are talking about. I've been to Fette Sau twice, had exceptional barbecue, and the people who work there are nothing but super nice. Their lines are continuously out the door, so yeah, sometimes they may be a little harried, and yeah they may sell out of some stuff, but give them a break! It's a new business, and they're wildly successful. I'm sure they never dreamed they'd be selling as much as they are. However, they always have several offerings (I've never seen the case empty), and the fact that they change over what they offer several times a night ensures that what you're getting is fresh and delicious. It takes a while to cook brisket until the fat and ligaments break down so much that it MELTS in your mouth. I think Fette Sau is an unpretentious, delicious, inexpensive (my boyfriend and I ordered A LOT of food and the bill was $20) alternative in Williamsburg. The only complaint I have is that the crowd can get a little rowdy...but feh, what does that matter if I can have amazing BBQ and delicious beer at a reasonable price?
- Pros: Brisket, beans, potato salad, ribs; nice people; great space.
- Cons: A little loud?
An old garage makes the picture-perfect location for this Williamsburg-style barbecue joint.

If you've ever pondered the aesthetic of pairing a $5 thrift store tee with $250 jeans, then you'll probably appreciate the rehabbed irony of tractor-seats barstools at a white-tiled bar, and an antique-looking mantle surrounding a blazing digital fire. The carefully distressed details are everwhere--including the weathered indoor and outdoor picnic tables filled with 20- and 30-something carnivores. Though the restaurant's German name means "fat pig," it's the beef that gives Texas' best a run for the money. Both the brisket and the house-made pastrami benefit from a lengthy stay in the wood-fired smoker and hold up well to the rich, heavy-handed rub. All the meat comes caked in char--thanks to the carmalized sugar and espresso-ground coating.
Horrible BBQ! No flavor and dry
by annabelcruz
We saw a line of people outside so we naturally assumed the food must be great. we were so disappointed with the metal tray of what they served as BBQ. The meat was cold and had no flavor The pork belly was so fatty I couldn't even eat it. We tried the flank steak and the meat was falling apart because it was so dry. They sell the meat by the pound so if you want to try this place, make sure you have FETTE POCKETS!!
- Pros: interesting decor, good outdoor space
- Cons: horrible food, long lines and very expensive
