Mule was the first step in the continuing upgrade of 4th ave in Brooklyn. More like something from E. Williamsburg or Bushwick (or Vermont) than creep from 5th Ave., Mule is a beautifully finished, comfortable, low key place to grab a decent cup of coffee, great slice of pie, or excellent sandwich. The kitchen can be a touch slow, but it's a great room to wait in, and the service is extremely friendly. They could have done anything with this place and it would have been the best cafe in the area - there's nothing else around. Luckily for us, they went the extra mile; Mule is as cool and cozy a cafe as one could want in any town or neighborhood.

Out of all the Park Slope cafes, Mule has the best coffee. I mean, the coffee tastes like coffee instead of flat dirty water and the espresso is not bitter and burnt. It's tiny so getting a table may be a challenge but there is always the bar unless you need an outlet to plug in a laptop. They also have a pretty nice variety of food. The place can get loud in the evening mostly because the transformation from cafe to bar. Free wi-fi is an added bonus.

  • Pros: Excellent coffee, good food variety, unique cafe/bar scene
  • Cons: Small, loud in the evening

i agree with the previous poster - the service is terrible. as i have mentioned in another site, customer service was terrible in all my visits to mule except for one. they're not necessarily rude - it always, always, always takes a very long time until you are acknowledged by a barista, even when they are not busy at all. during one visit, the baristas had their backs turned to the 2 or 3 customers waiting to place their orders - one barista was counting money and the other fiddling with the ipod playlist. even when the one messing with the ipod was done with that "task", he started chatting with the other barista and completely ignored the customers. i desperately want to love that place, since the coffee and pastries are pretty good, but it's just not worth my time or my money (or the aggravation).

  • Pros: good coffee & pastries
  • Cons: SERVICE

Mule has great coffee (though the flavor and politics of Gorilla Coffee, a few blocks away make it my neighborhood fave). Given its location along 4th Ave heading toward the Atlantic/Pacific subway, you would think Mule would want to serve this population. Think again. The service at Mule is abysmal--and don't tell me it's what we should expect from a place called Mule. I once waited a half hour for the one person behind the counter to prepare one of the "delicious" sandwiches people rave about (and it was hardly delicious). I had to walk out the other day after waiting ten minutes for a pastry while the young man behind the counter literally watched coffee drip from the espresso machine into a cup as a line of customers formed. This is inexcusable, the straw that broke the mule's back.

  • Pros: location, decor, coffee
  • Cons: service is awful

BEST COFFEE IN THE SLOPE, hands down. The food is wonderful, too, much better than usual coffeehouse fare. Great garden in the back, unpretentious vibe, airy and tastefully decorated. The employees are friendly, intelligent, and make a mean cup of joe.

  • Pros: coffee, food, ambience, friendly employees
  • Cons: service a bit slow sometimes

The coffee is good but the sandwiches are great. They have a huge backyard with a mammoth sized picnic table and a wodden mule for kids to sit on. Inside had nice dark wood and a western inspired bar with a lot of iron work.

  • Pros: Backyard, Good food

I want to second everything said by the first reviewer. This is the best cafe I've been to in Brooklyn, perhaps in all of New York City. Excellent sandwiches and soups, great coffee drinks and staff that serves them, free wireless internet, lovely backyard garden, and wonderful dark wood decor inside. I know they are getting a liquor license soon, and I just hope the place doesn't change too much because of that. Wonderful place to sit, read, eat, caffeinate, think, write, chat, etc. Also a block and a half from the Atlantic Ave./Pacific St. station.

I have been a regular fixture at Mule since it's opening earlier this year, and I must say, it has every other coffee shop in the area beat by a mile. Located on 4th Ave in the Park Slope / Boerum Hill hinterland, this spot is a standout.

The name is apt and clever, since the coffee works as hard as a mule, government or otherwise. The menu has everything you need for a fresh tasty snack or a solid, well priced lunch (sandwiches on delightful artisan bread are key). But really it's the employees that keep me coming back. In contrast to other places I've been in the area, these folks are intelligent, but unpretentious, courteous, engaging, and downright hot. Also, the patrons are pretty much hipster-free.

Abandon your pre-conceived notions about coffee shops. It's Mule, or it's a bust.
