Great service, amazing wines, out of the ordinary selections
by mommakitty at Citysearch
I came in recently and asked for help picking out wines for a special dinner with friends. All the wines were perfect pairs! They helped me pick out aperitif cocktails to serve and sent me home with recipes on a nice handout they had created. And they even carried my box of goodies out to my car for me!
- Pros: Open till midnight, friendly staff, small store packed with fun finds
- Cons: hard to get to by public transportation
Rude!
by fauxserious at Citysearch
I just called to inquire about their Absinthe selection and was informed the brand I was looking for was "the worst thing I've ever tasted, we don't carry it because we don't like it". Great, a simple "no" would have sufficed. The second one I asked about Belle Amie was declared "not real absinthe, made by people who just started" which is completely untrue. If you're going to be condescending and rude at least be well informed! It's actually one of the top rated absinthes on wormwoodsociety-org, a place where you won't find imitations. I asked what they did have and he said they carried Lucid. I said "oh, I don't like Lucid" and he replied "well, that's what real Absinthe tastes like". So helpful! I've had many absinthes, some genuine vintage, some imitation and a few of the new legal ones, including Lucid, which I don't care for. This place advertises NO SNOBS, well this guy was a piece of work, I just wanted to get off the phone instead of being chastised. I won't be making the trip to Red Hook any time soon.
- Pros: allegedly good selection
- Cons: condescending unhelpful staff
Not a good wine store...
by marktanger at Citysearch
This is not a very good wine store and it is very out of the way. I specifically came to the wine store when I read about it in Timeout and I would never go back. The staff is not very knowledgeable and borderline rude. Better to stay in your own neighborhood then to trek out to desolate Red Hook. I seriously don?t know what all the bru-ha-ha is about. Take my word for it.
- Pros: none
- Cons: Location, Staff, Knowledge base
Everything you didn't know you wanted to drink
by bpeikes at Citysearch
Every time I walk into this store there is something else I've never seen before. All small producer wines, and it seems like all the staff is friendly. Bourbon selection to die for and tons of bitters.
- Pros: interesting events, unique selection, hard to find goods
- Cons: out of the way
