Comfort Food...a welcome break from the pretentiousness of the nouveau residents in Brooklyn

by downtownbkrealtor

The sevice is relaxed (some would say slow), but in accordance with the atmosphere. The decor is a kitschy Lodge/Diner mix that makes you feel comfortable in any attire. All the food is delicious, though please don't eat it all in one sitting (we all need to fit into subway seats occasionally after all). This is a place to eat with family and friends not to impress clients or dates. My greatest complaint was the loud live music they've started to bring in for brunches - it neither works for families nor the hangover crowd, both of which adore this place.

  • Pros: The food and relaxed atmosphere
  • Cons: Parking is relatively impossible

Reliable neighborhood standby

by halthaus

Lots of strong feelings about this place, apparently, but I have to say that it's one of our local favorites. I admit there have been a couple of meals that disappointed me, but they were typically things that might have been on the overly-ambitious side for the kitchen. Gravy serves up a terrific breakfast or brunch--if you're lucky enough to get there on a day when there's a berry pancake special, look no further, because they're terrific. My experience with service has been mostly very good; there have been one or two less-than-stellar performers, but, hey, it ain't Alain Ducasse, so I can forgive. This is a comfortable place with decent food, and it's been a very welcome addition to the neighborhood.

  • Pros: Reliable, great breakfasts, casual and comfortable
  • Cons: Doesn't take credit cards

Might be the worst restaurant in Brooklyn

by tondorf

Gravy's numerical rating on Citysearch is missing ... perhaps an act of mercy? Gravy doesn't do anything right, which is too bad, because it's got a prime location and serves food later than most places in the area. Avoid at all costs and give your money to a place that actually cares to improve itself.

  • Pros: its central location
  • Cons: service and food

average all the way, with terrible service!

by nyloops

small menu selection, VERY small. good omelets, ok drinks, TERRIBLE service. My friend ordered a vanilla milkshake, got a Mimosa...! Service was slow and very unattentive.

it was ok decore, kinda dirty.

not crowded on a sat. around noon.

  • Pros: seating readily available round noon on a sat. for 6!
  • Cons: unattentive service that messes up your order.

Gravy was good to me

by s_k

Went on a Saturday night for a quick dinner around 10pm - too late for the dinner rush, but not quite late enough for the after-bar crowd so there weren't too many other people there (though I can imagine a full house of annoying hipsters might be a huge turn-off).

The place is huge, tons of tables and cozy booths.

Our waitress was attentive, our food arrived quickly and correctly. The turkey burger stuffed with goat cheese was delicious, great fries, too.

There are good beers on tap, and cans of PBR are always appreciated!

Our Lazy Weekend Standard

by canobar

Not sure what the miserable ratings are all about- this place is great. Lots of comfy seating- both indoors and out- makes a long wait for a table unlikely. Easy relaxed atmosphere, lovely staff, delicious brunch options (both old-school basics like grits and poached eggs and more fancy varieties) great value, and magazines to read while you wait. Sit outside and lose an entire unrushed morning to bloody marys.

  • Pros: Great brunch, relaxed atmosphere
  • Cons: Lots of screaming kids

So Much Better!

by dduprey

I go to Pacifico a lot, and so was excited about Gravy opening last year. But when we first went it was so bad. I mean, bad. But recently we've been going back a lot. It's so much better now. The menu is tighter, the portions are huge, and they've figured out what to capitalize on instead of doing it all. It's super air conditioned and they've got great big booths so it's nice for a relaxed dinner out. I love the Portobello Sandwich and the Blue Plate Fried Chicken, Fried Steak, and Prime Rib are delicious. Best fries ever. I'm starting to recognize a lot of the staff, and they're hipsterish, but very curteous and relaxed. Now they've got Trout outside, the Beer Garden type thing they've converted their back patio into, and it's really nice to go out there for a cheap beer after dinner. The guys who own that corner are doing a lot of things right, it just takes them some time to smooth things out.

  • Pros: Food, Portions, Cool Drinks
  • Cons: Sometimes lots of kids with milkshake sugar highs

The worst meal I've ever had.

by angela_rose

Seriously. We went to Gravy for brunch not long ago and have not stopeed talking about what and abysmal experience it was since then. We each odered the "special" A greek fritata and "huevos mexicanos." Let me describe.

The greek fritata was essentially a disk of undercooked egg with some chopped up (and raw) onion, tomato and super salty feta dumped on top of it. Not cooked in it. And I don't know what makes this greek. it came with nothing else.

The huevos was a runny, cheesy sloppy mess with a tortilla and some black beans.

We had two cold cups of bad coffee too.

Both were disgusting, and I'm not exagerating. And then to add insult to injury, the bill was $26 for what was by leaps and bounds the worst breakfast I've ever had. If you're serving garbage, charge $5.00 for it.

  • Cons: awful food

Great local greasy spoon!

by sabrinabean

Gravy is great as a local staple that you can go to without thinking much about if you're dressed appropriately or if your budget can handle an impromptu splurge. I love the red flannel corned beef hash and the pancakes with mixed berries. The portions are respectable and the atmosphere is always warm and comfortable. This place is not for you if you're looking for a trendy or fancy dining experience. It's great for just a relaxing and hearty greasy spoon meal.

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Not Crowded

Gravy? Just say No....

by mitsy4400

Good feelings ended as soon as we walked in. Our waiter was less then welcoming when taking our drink orders (apparently he doesn't like beer or milkshakes). After disappearing for about 15 minutes he came back for our food order (if you're going to play the TGI Friday's game and not write down the orders at least hire people with some short term memory.....). 10 minutes later we received one soda and one beer but two milkshakes were missing. When they finally arrived they were wrong which the waiter acknowledged with a shrug and walked away. When we received our food it was getting cold and pretty much tossed at us. Not to mention through all of this we froze as there didn't seem to be a drop of heat in the place. We paid the check with a minimal tip and hightailed it out of there.....never to return.
