Brooklyn's Sushi Palace

Tell ya what, if you're a foodie and love sushi, but not making a trip to NYC, go to Gen! "Hands down", best shrimp shumai ever... Staff is warm, welcoming and friendly. Chefs are phenom... Get in early, cuz the place is small. They do have a back patio I believe? But my girl and I always chill at the bar, "Get out of my seat!!!" No really, great place and waaay affordable. So glad I live less than a 5 minute walk. Very impressive for a 5 year venture!!!

Disappointing

Sadly, a let down. The menu looked great, and the prices were reasonable, so we gave it a shot for carry-out. Bones in our sushi were an unpleasant surprise (and painful) and other things (Teriyaki chicken) we ordered were disappointing. We ended up tossing a lot out, because it just wasn't good. Other rave reviews leave me puzzled. Maybe dine-in is the best choice here?

Amazing sushi.

I can't recommend this restaurant enough!!! The food is amazing, the space is lovely, and the staff are all super friendly. The only issues I would say are 1) the place is small, so sometimes it can be a bit of a wait and 2) when the outside garden is open for seating, there isn't always enough waitstaff to go around. However, the outdoor garden is so lovely that I never seem to care. And the food is so wonderful that the wait is totally worth it.

The portions of sushi/sashimi are huge. No joke. This is the only sushi place I've ever been where I can order sashimi and an apetizer and be totally stuffed at the end. Their specials are always creative and super tasty. Their sushi is great. Really, I've never had a bad thing here! (I particularly like the pork belly appetizer)

I highly recommend this place!

Good food but horrible wait time

We have been there several times. Food is great, and that's no doubt, but they never have enough waiters/waitresses. The last three visits, we had to wait over an 20 minutes for a drink and over an hour for food. Too much of a wait. Never want to go back unless they hire more people.

The Scene
On a lonely corner in Prospect Heights, this restaurant feels worlds away from the bustling bistros of Park Slope and Fort Greene. Chatting over Japanese snacks like crisp pumpkin tempura and savory grilled eggplant, the young, hip crowd fills a small, no-frills dining space and spills into the very Zen backyard.

The Food
Broiled eel and ripe avocado make a perfect pairing, whether piled over mesclun greens, or stuffed into a too-cute Godzilla roll, with a spine of avocado triangles and ikura for eyes. Try the house specialties, like the yellowtail roll with fresh mango and avocado, and the saku saku, a tuna-avocado-scallion roll with macadamia nuts and fried potato topping--but skip the spider roll to avoid overly fishy fried crab. The yakiniku, a hearty plate of beef, rice, and veggies with Japanese barbecue sauce, satisfies carnivores. For a sugar rush, go for the deep-fried banana harumaki, drizzled with sesame and honey syrup.

We are obsessed with this place....

We are obsessed with this place. We eat here twice a week because we have found it to be the best sushi place, well ever. Yeah I know that sounds crazy but I swear everything we try is wonderful. The only dish I don?t enjoy is the pork belly, but my husband loves it. The food is creative without being so wacky that it?s not palatable and there is a fun unique staff. I almost don?t want to tell everyone how good it is.

• Cons: Wouldn't mind a different paint job and having it warmer in the winter by the windows

What a GEM to find near the Brooklyn Museum and the Botanical Gardens!

the Food is wonderful, fresh and easy on the wallet. The Atmosphere is great

with a Garden in the back. All in all, this is a Must See/Eat at place!

I recently stumbled across this hidden gem after going to the Brooklyn Museum. It is the best Japanese food I have experienced since being in Kyoto. I didn't even order sushi! Wonderful Chicken Katsu Don and Beef Teryaki. Do not miss the desserts either! They are fabulous.

Best sushi in Brooklyn....possibly all of new york city!

I live just around the corner from Gen and finally tried it for the first time a few weeks ago and it was not at all what I was expecting. I've eaten in lots of sushi places around the city but this place stands out. From the moment I walked in I was impressed. The atmosphere is perfect, the staff genuine and sweet, and the food most importantly is delicious and well priced. My friend and I feasted on a delicious eel roll, a tempura roll, yaki udo, and a few other things and we each spent only $24. It was a bargain. It's my new favorite restaurant!
