best fish and chips i've had

by huqleberryDOTcom

Best fish and chips I have had hands down. The frequenters are not much to write about. For some reason a lot of loners eat there by the bar including me on several occasions. Get the cod and chips with a Harp Lager or 2 and remember that there are things that can be truly enjoyed in this world. The now have 3 locations including mine on Atlantic and Henry. The others are the original in Park Slope and the newest in Bay Ridge

Good chippery and we're lucky to have it.......

Upon reading the reviews, one in particular made me a bit annoyed. In regards to the "Hover, Hover, Hover" review by sdefrance. You know the service industry is already a lose lose situation upon the customers they're trying to impress. Meaning either you didn't get enough attention during your meal or you got too much attention during your meal. That whole comment on "American's should learn how to leave dinner alone" and "that would never happen in a true English pub" bit is a little much. Honestly, if you don't want people to ask how your doing, etc., then you should invest in your own fish fry, and try to hook it up like the Chip Shop at home, where you can eat in silence. You have to take in consideration that in a True English pub, people's hourly wages are taken seriously and tipping is not their livelihood nor required. Where as here tipping is a persons bread and butter, why, because the average server's hourly wage is less than minimum wage ($2.50-5.00). So displaying an attentive dining experience is going to be more beneficial in making a living for oneself. They leave you alone in an "true" English Pub, because tipping is not required, so they really don't care about "how your doing", or if they "can get you anything else", etc. So when you get asked "how is everything", "may I get you anything else", etc., It goes beyond the common concern of your dinning experience, but whether or not your going to read your American Tour Guide, and tip, or just adapt the foreign way of tipping, which usually consists of "Cheers" with a smile! I'm not in the service industry, as shocking as it may sound, but I do know that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that a "Cheers" and a smile, isn't going to pay the rent!

Sorry I went off on a tantrum, but I'm just trying to stand-up for GREAT FOOD and GOOD old attentive American busting tail for that dollar service. Food and service is awesome guy's, keep up the good work!

  • Pros: A general concern in your dining experience.
  • Cons: People who compare and are unable to adapt.

Fun and Tasty Fried Goodies For All Ages

by necity123

This place is so cute and so much fun. The British decorations are kitschy and colorful. The fish is always really fresh and they serve good size portions. I?ve even had the fish baked without the batter, and it?s still pretty tasty. For a non-fried dish I recommend the pies. Their traditional English breakfast on the weekends is yummy and is also available in a veggie version. If you can handle a dessert, try one of the fried candy bars or twinkies ? sounds heavy, but is surprisingly a special little treat!

  • Pros: Tasty food, fun atmosphere

Hover, hover, hover...

by sdefrance

I can't complain about the food in this place -- it was fresh, gooey and good. If anything, the portions were too large; the price was just right. Even the atmosphere made my friend and I feel at home with that faux Brit look. I could best describe the service, however, as a sad exercise in hovering, much reminiscent of the helicopters that seem to roam above the nearby Atlantic Basin. I had barely two bites of my delicious steak and kidney pie, when a member of staff began her descent upon us with a persistent "Is everything alright[s]?," "Is everything okay[s]?" and "Will there be anything else[s]?" for the duration of the meal. It [she] really did give us indigestion in the end. When will Americans learn -- leave diners alone! You wouldn't find this kind of hovering in a real English pub.

  • Pros: food, noise level
  • Cons: service

So, so good

by pcsii

I love this place. Just the best pub grub and grog you can get. The fish and chips are spectacular, the traditional plaice being my favorite. They pour a proper Guiness, but offer a beer for any taste.

Authentic brit food

by pumpkinpieman

Been here 3 times now & I like it better than the Park Slope location. The staff here is friendlier and the ambience is much better. The fried cod & chips is perfection and everything is authentic. Try anything fried with chocolate--not only is it unusual, but it is well worth the calories. It's definately a taste adventure!

  • Pros: Authentic, Yummy food, Nice Staff

Better than the first

by koxo

We have been waiting for this place to open for some time (the Park Slope one is great but this one is closer) and it did not disappoint. Overall the food is the same (the Haddock and chips are perfect) but the space is nicer, the staff is friendlier and the mushy peas taste right (which is important! the slope ones were a little too atomic green and flavorless ) My boyfriend is a Brit and everything - particularly the steak and kidney pie - passed the authenticity test as well. It's a great value and a lot of fun and I am truly glad that this joint is still a good 10 blocks away otherwise I would be a million pounds.

Bringing British fare to Brooklyn Heights with a generous side of chips.

by Erin Behan

The Scene
The casual pub atmosphere translates well for the neighborhood crowd--young, old, families, singles--that packs the restaurant's wooden tables. A traditional bar, British band posters and knickknacks hanging from the walls completes the look from across the ocean.

The Food
The main event--the battered and crisply fried fish, available as cod, haddock or plaice--arrives atop a mountain of authentic thickly cut chips, to be liberally dashed with vinegar. To complete the gastro journey of fried goodness, there's a gooey side of fried macaroni and an entire menu of fried candy bars. (The deep-fried Twinkies are like sugar explosions in your mouth.) If fried food isn't your thing, try the bangers and mash, two plump, seasoned sausages and smooth creamy mash, or the hearty shepherd's pie. The staff's welcome sense of humor makes ordering the Spotted Dick, a scrumptious sponge pudding dotted with raisins, an easy affair.

So fried, so good

by wpbeardsley

After coming here 5 times in a week, I may need to take a month off to let my arteries recover, but otherwise I'm thrilled to have it in the neighborhood. Besides having Tetley's and Belhaven on tap, the cod and chips are nearly perfect, as are the Fried Mars' bars and Fried Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. Stay away from the fried twinkies unless you really love twinkies -- the chocolate is much better. Really good though, and reasonable too.

  • Pros: Fried perfection, reasonable $$, waiters with accents
  • Cons: $$$ beer
