nice venue -- horrible staff

by esmith223

This place would be awesome... except the staff has a serious attitude problem.

If I wanted an attitude I would have stayed in Manhattan.

This review doesn't include the upstairs, which I didn't try but the food looked good.

  • Pros: customers are cool and there is food upstairs
  • Cons: the staff, including the DJ

This Clinton Hill bar serves up art, literature, music, Greek food and, best of all, some room to breathe.

by Kara Zuaro

The Scene
This laid-back, 5,000-square-foot watering hole isn't meant to make Taaffe Place the next Bedford Avenue. The folks who work here are more interested in attracting the long-term residents of Clinton Hill than the transient Pratt set. But with cheap eats, gigantic margaritas and a tiny library, stocked with Kant, Chomsky and Nabokov, the art students can't stay away.

The Draw
In the tremendous basement, mod furniture and groovy chandeliers conjure up a retro-futuristic look, perhaps inspired by the style that was considered space-age when Sputnik was launched in 1957. A large gallery space hosts shows from local artists, and a mid-sized stage features an array of live music (blues, funk, rock and hip-hop) and an occasional burlesque performance.

half lounge half divey sports bar

by patriciakm

The editorial review calls it a 'chilled out lounge.' When Sputnik is at its best, it is that - a great space, quirky/hip decor, cheap eats and a mellow vibe can be found about HALF the time when I visit Sputnik. The other half of the time you'll either find

A. the music too loud and metal/thrasher rock oriented to really enjoy a conversation, beverage, snack, or even 10 minutes of lounging

or B. The giant projection screen usually used for background screening of art house movies being used as a giant TV to show a ball game, with sound at full blast.

If they could be consistent in their vibe, they'd get a consistent customer out of me!

  • Pros: cheap, big , good food
  • Cons: too loud, weird music, ball games

Easy like Sunday morning

by courtwolf

$11 gets you a generous portion of your favorite brunch fare plus a huge, spicey and delicious bloody mary (or a sparkling mimosa if you prefer). The laid back atmosphere lends well to a long game of Risk, perusing the Sunday Times, delving into a good book or just relaxing and listening to the DJ spin soft jazz. Expect to wait a bit for your food, but just relax and enjoy the friendly staff and the chill ambience. And don't forget to stop by the downstairs for art and music shows at night!

  • Pros: bloody mary!, cheap eats, great atmosphere
  • Cons: slowish service
