Rude service, so-so food.

by manni22

Really, really rude service - from a manager! The food is mediocre and high priced.

  • Pros: You have other options.
  • Cons: The service and the food.

CAFE LULUc, 214 Smith Street, Brooklyn, AVOID!

by NSH1

I visited this restaurant for a late night dinner after flying across the country. Three bites into my meal, I found a cigarette butt in my entree which the waiter verified as such. I refused a replacement entree. When I informed the restauranteur that I would be leaving, she tried to charge me and my date for our meals and would not let us leave without paying for at least our drinks.

Unless you're interested in an ashy dish and zero concern for the quality of the food or the well-being of the diner, AVOID!

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Cigarettes in food

BEST PANCAKES!

by crazylegs08

This probably comes and no surprise--LuLuc's has the BEST PANCAKES (excuse my enthusiasm) I've and the people who surround me, have ever had. Hands down. The prices are good (and will hopefully stay that way)...but honestly, if you do go, the eggs benedict with bacon are dandy but the pancakes are amazing Good eats!

Felt like I was in Paris

by shutupandeat

My fiancee & I are hard-core gourmands & typically prefer our own cooking to what we're served in run of the mill spots. [We only eat at chains when dragged there against our will (we are, after all, New Yorkers).] So we enter every new restaurant with a "prove yourself" attitude.

Drifted in for dinner last night. As we entered, the manager apologized that his A/C was broken & offered a seat in the back patio. We decided to take a table in the front of the restaurant instead since the breeze was delightful coming in from the fully open front doors.

We each ordered an app, entree & dessert & were equally ecstatic about the meal. The curry soy sauce with the calamari was incredible & the yellow tomato gazpacho a treat, but the entrees were even better. I got the seared striped bass with avocado, mango deliciousness from the regular menu & was blown away by the subtlety of the flavors. Truly sublime. My fiancee got the red snapper special with portobellos & couscous, which was equally stellar. Wherever we go, usually one of us hits a high note & the other an "eh" note, but we both agreed we could trade dishes & enjoy them just as much as our own.

For dessert, mint gelato for him & molten chocolate cake a la mode for me. He loved his gelato, though it was like gum for dessert to me -- why bother? The first few bites of the chocolate cake were all I should've had, but it was so damn good, it disappeared. Cest la vie -- today's workout made it totally worth it.

The service was wonderfully attentive all the way until it was time to get the check. We'd drunk 2 of the 3 carafes of water they'd brought us & lingered for a good amount of time after our dessert plates were cleared. We both thought we'd signaled for the check at least 3 times before it finally arrived several minutes later ($70 for 2 non-drinkers). I can't complain though -- that made it feel even more like being in Paris.

They're not rude. They're French.

  • Pros: spectacular flavors, fresh seafood, romantic ambience
  • Cons: don't go if you don't like the French (more room for us)

Large Cardboard pieces in the Tortellini

by jasminespringer

My friend got the Tortellini, and right away noticed that there was something strange about his meal, I thought they were potato skins, then saw the wwwww shape between two pieces of cardboard. We got the manager over and explained that that was not part of the meal and he said, "ohh?" and walked away with the plate still in front of him and out of site for almost 10 minutes. Finally our waiter came over and said, "I understand that there was something wrong with your dish" and smiled? I thought he was joking so asked him to repeat, he then said "I talked to the manager and we will remove it from the bill, anything else" this whole time not one I'm sorry was ever uttered. He finally brought the bill and I asked for exact change, I've never NOT left a tip ever in my life. I was baffled by the lack of response and shear non chalant attitude of all the staff, by the way the manager never, never came back to our table. I've gotten a better reaction and apology when Starbucks gave me the wrong drink, (not 2 pieces of cardboard 1x2 in my friends plate from obviously frozen tortellini) maybe the staff at Luluk needs to spend a week with a barrista at starbucks or a cashier at mcdonalds.

  • Pros: Fiber in your food
  • Cons: Cardboard in the tortellini - imagine what I didn't find

Great brunch, and interesting dishes

by kmgorman

I really enjoy eating at Cafe Luluc. It has the ambiance of a french bistro, which is typically not my scene, but the dishes have a unique twist. I love the chick pea salad, and their summer soups, like the gezpacho and cold cucumber and yogurt. Their brunch is fantastic, and their outdoor garden is warm and inviting. I also love that they give you a glass bottle of water on the table, so you don't have to constantly hunt down your server for more water. The waitstaff is friendly, but I wouldn't recommend trying to deviate from the menu.

  • Pros: Interesting dishes, Great brunch
  • Cons: Requests for substitutions on the menu are often "forgotten"

brunch and dinner

by schuy7

Most any meal will be good and also cheap. I usually stick to the sandwiches. Brunch on sundays can all be lousy, and I wouldn't know, because I always get the pancakes. Those I can say with certainty are amazing.

GREAT PLACE IN BROOKLYN YUPPIVILLE!

by rolfrestaurantsux

ok, this is a good spot in downtown yuppie g--TTO of brooklyn. Now you have to expect the usual plan of trying to fit a table in every last inch of space. But that is supposedly cool that i can hear the trust fund babies talk about their gallery opening or some other pretentious babble.

now to the food, very good, best creme brulee in the city!, excellent hanger steak, tremendous mojitos!

i have never been disappointed here, come on down and be a hipster for a day and eat good!

  • Pros: GREAT FOOD,
  • Cons: YUPPIE HIPSTERVILLE, PRETENTIOUS, SNOBBY CUSTOMERS.

Left a bad taste in my mouth.

by anais11231

I have lived in the neighborhood for many years and finally decided to take a seat in this small cafe. I should have walked out immediately upon encountering the rude and unaccommodating wait staff. Against my better judgment, I remained and ordered. The food was greasy and bland. I walked out with a lighter wallet and a stomach ache - do not recommend.

  • Pros: They have a menu.
  • Cons: Terrible service, unpalatable food, overcharges.
