Worst Place Ever

by Hopeandwhat

Don't waste you time or money in there. I was just banned from writing what I truly think.

SO much for free speech...

Worst food. Worst staff. Worst experience EVER!

Real Food For Real People

by caroster

Came in for dinner while visiting friends in Red Hook who recommendedthe place. The best burger I have had - maybe ever. Same for the meatloaf. Friendly servers. Interesting cocktails menu. Try the apple pie, which was probably a foot high!. Later in the night there were two birthday parties and a 7 foot karaoke host! Brunch the next morning was packed but still fast and fresh. Worth a visit.

Fantastic Hip Old School Neighborhood Joint

by luvaduk

I had heard about Hope & Anchor for a few years now but never wandered in - until I went for dinner at 360 only to find they were closed. I was very impressed. The meatloaf was outsfanding. Fish tacos as good as any I have had anywhere in the U.S. All homemade desserts - we had a truly great apple pie and a fabulous blueberry pie. Casual happy staff. Great cocktail list. Good music. I have since been back for brunch - huge tasty omelettes, fluffy buttermilk pancakes, unique bbq hash. A real find for the unpretentious, hungry diner....

potatos tasted like bleach

by ladyjayen

the first time I went there, I though it was "eh." The second time I went there I liked the waiter a lot, but the food less. The fries are horribly flavorless. The third time (i live in red hook and options are slim) I ordered the "yogurt parfait"... a horrible name for a dish with no sweatner, no fruit, just plain yogurt and granola served in a fancy glass... and some home fries. the home fries tasted like bleach.

I refused the parfait, and the waitress didn't offer me anything to replace it, so I left to eat granola at home. Now that I'm home I feel a little funky. I think I'm gonna be sick.

never again. forgo the potato breakfast and get yummy treats at baked instead. lord knows the coffee is better too.

  • Pros: cute staff
  • Cons: horrible food.

limited menu for a diner, but good food.

by wendysdad

ok we've been checking out various spots in red hook lateley (lenells, the pie man, fairway), so to keep the streak alive we went to check out the hope and anchor for dinner. having grown up in queens, i'm used to a diner menu reading like an offering memorandum. the menu was pretty straightforward, and i was looking forward to the upscale twist that has landed this place staying power in zagats for more than a few years. we had the meatloaf dinner and the steak diane. both were meticulously prepared, with exceptional focus paid to the main course. the meatloaf was quite good, crusty and well done on the sides. mashed potatoes were well executed, as were the string beans. steak diane was a little on the rare side, but finished with a nice sauce and mushrooms. the rice-a-roni (?) was a bit dried out. we ordered a soup (new england clam chowder) which was not good at all (sour), but was readily taken off the bill. I am not a finicky eater, but when food is unacceptable...that is where i draw the line. otherwise we enjoyed a very pleasant meal in what felt like more of a hipster bar/ diner. where they missed on the soup, they made up for on the limeade. no room for dessert...maybe next time. sandwiches and fries looked good.

  • Pros: good food
  • Cons: tough to find and get to if you dont belong in brooklyn

At Last!

by bklynbeach

Perhaps the rarest of all creatures in New York City - a true neightborhood diner. I have eaten here perhaps a dozen or so times in the last year, with various friends, and have never been disappointed. Real food - fantastic meatloaf, burgers, philly cheese. Great salads - Viet, Cobb, grilled tuna. Killer deserts, including the best banana cream pie and chocolate cake I have ever tasted. The brunch is always packed and it's easy to see why - try the weekly benedict specials. t's nice to have a local choice with no attitude, and real variety.

oh the life of a diner

by banjo78

this place is great if you don't spend more than $12 for your food and a drink. if you spend mroe than that your bound to be dissappointed. the salads are always limp and not quite right, the sandwiches are somewhat bland and tasteless....atmosphere however is comfortable, the waitstaff somewhat annoying but friendly - stick to the all day $3 breakfast and you'll be totally content.

  • Pros: comfortable, has a bar, all day cheap breakfast
  • Cons: uninspired menu, kinda grimey around the edges

The Hype

by isinger

Very solid food, comfortable place. Crowded on the weekends, at least, but well worth the wait. For some reason, I was compelled to order a turkey burger, something I haven't had in years.

I was delighted to get a huge, well-priced, and juicy burger.

I don't quite know why I've been hearing SO much about this place, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for a good brunch.

I like this place a lot

by ipaltrow

There isn't a lot to say about Hope and Anchor except it is very good. I have never been disappointed with the food or the service. The prices are reasonable, the service is good, the host is very friendly, and the place has a good red hooky vibe.

  • Pros: food, prices, vibe
  • Cons: none really
