Consistently good food

by seraphina31

I've lived in several Asian countries and enjoy being able to visit Faan and revel in a specific few dishes. (I'm the kind of person who finds a good dish and will order it repeatedly).

The martinis are ridiculously strong, but its the Chicken Panang Curry that I go back for which reminds me very much of Malaysia. The pad thai/flat noodles are a little on the oily side (deducted one star for that), but i love how consistent this place is and how they are always quick with the service (and the free edamame).

Try the Chicken Panang, and you can't go wrong!

  • Pros: Prices, taste, service
  • Cons: Oiliness to noodle dishes

Mystery Beef

by indigenousnewyorker

I ordered the Beef Panang Curry here. Never have I eaten beef with the suspicious consistency i found in this dish - chewey and rubbery and just downright inexplicable. While chewing, I felt like I was never going to being able digest it. I have eaten here before (mostly sushi) - and have ordered-in numerous times in the past with success. Not sure what's going on here now. Be safe - don't order the Beef Panang.

  • Pros: Nice decor, Accepts Amex, etc.
  • Cons: Bad Beef

Go somewhere else

This place was so bad. But maybe it was because it was like 2 in the morning when i went to the restaurant. We ordered chicken skewers, dumplings and something like silky spice seafood noodle soup-- everything was gross -- even the dumplings. Service was pretty fast & efficient.

  • Pros: Fast service, open late
  • Cons: Food is gross and unedible when you're sober

awesome sushi; awesome service

by kands

My friends and I have been going here regularly for two years. I've been to plenty of great sushi spots in manhattan; Faan is always my favorite for sushi and chinese. The sushi/sashimi for two is a GREAT value. I LOVE their spicy scallop roll, and my boyfriend consistently gets the sesame chicken. Their sake martini is wonderful.

I find the service to be so friendly and very quick, and we are often greeted w/edamame on the house. It is by far my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn.

  • Pros: Sushi & service are outstanding
  • Cons: possibly their Thai selections?

average at best

by sousthis

the food in general seems to be average at best, certain dishes seem to shine more than others and portions sizes seem to vary greatly, i ordered the salmon thai style and was presented a nice size portion but when i bit into it i was greeted with an over cooked filet that lacked the quality i was expecting it tasted like the salmon you buy in bulk at a costco or sams club, the curry sauce accompanying it was very watery and seemd to be dependent on chunks of canned pineapple to bring out its taste. My friend ordered the sea bass and was given food that would only fil a small child with its tiny portions the sauce used for the bass was a basic brown sauce that any chinese takeout spot in nyc can make with ease

  • Pros: setting, price, lunch
  • Cons: portions, fish dishes

Once a rising star, now on the decline

by jeffspam

In an area strangely devoid of decent Chinese, Faan was one of our local favs for basic asian dishes. Delivery is *fast*, often arriving in only 20 mins (7 blocks away!). But food quality is hit or miss -- and recently, more miss. Noodle dishes taste like stale oil, with no real flavor. Fried dishes are HEAVY and dripping with grease. Appetizers are chewy, soggy, and bland. I know we're not the only ones to experience this; what was once a jam packed business is now rarely crowded. Faan needs some fresh blood in the kitchen -- c'mon, guys, let's get it together!

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Large menu, Fast delivery
  • Cons: Bland, Greasy, Uninspired

consistently good

by eatbetter

The drinks are always welll made and wine selection is fairly priced. Try their chef's specials-- they are to die for. Service is not exactly five star, but thats not really a big deal. Downstairs lounge is always a good attraction

  • Pros: food, crowd
  • Cons: rude bouncers

Come for the high-energy mood; stay for the cheap and decent Pan-Asian food.

The Scene
At the fun and friendly Faan, cell phone-toting, pierced college students rub shoulders with Birkenstocked baby boomers. When weather permits, patrons sit on the bare-bones outdoor deck or the makeshift sidewalk seating area. The interior is almost as casual, with a handful of tables and a tiny cocktail bar.

The Food
With nearly 200 dishes from every Asian country except India, there's something for everyone on the menu. The stir-fries portions are big with spice levels manageable for most palates. Beef with spinach is tasty, and anything with bright-flavored lemongrass is worth trying. Spring rolls are simple wonton wrappers folded around diced, fresh veggies; there's also Pad Thai. Sushi has novelty value: Try the crab and cucumber Brooklyn Roll.

Not a bad place, but uneven

by maxr

Faan's got a great concept but a little rough on the delivery. My GF and I still choose to eat there a lot because of diverse cocktails, the chill decor, and the decent sushi. But the thai is definitely not great -- bland and indistinguished. They don't seem to place an emphasis on specials or fresh ingredients which to me is necessary for good thai.

The service is not consistently excellent -- just decent. Get the feeling they settled into a groove a while ago. They need a kick out of it but until then the sushi is pretty good and the place is consistent.

  • Pros: Sushi, Drinks, Decor/Atmosphere
  • Cons: Service, Thai
