A juke joint for women and their pals.

by Contributor

In Short
The jukebox is the unwitting centerpiece in a long and very dimly lit room, where deep burgundy tones, a pressed-tin ceiling, and exposed brick and dark-wood accents set a rich but laid-back mood. The bright green light of the jukebox attracts the eye; selections include k.d. lang, Melissa Etheridge, the Rolling Stones, Dee-Lite and many "Best Of" collections. The crowd is racially mixed, with a decidedly sapphic edge, and orders up everything from bottled beers to the more exciting house drinks.

I go here with my boyfriend occasionally and we always have a great time. The bartenders are very friendly and serve a good drink at a fair price. great music and atmosphere and location. Nice and spacious too. No discrimination which is refreshing!!I recommend this place for anyone who would like to just relax and be in a safe, comfortable place.

Fun Bar In Great Neighborhood

by rebel1978

Ginger's is one of the most fun bars to hang out in along the 5th Avenue bar row in Park Slope. They have karaoke that gets everyone going on Thursday nights. They seem to be equally gay and hetero friendly, meaning they don't discriminate here and everyone is welcome regardless of race or sexual orientation. Service was great. The only problem I have with this place is their drink prices are little high. $4 for a domestic bottle is a little expensive for this neighborhood. I agree with the other reviewer that they really should have more drink specials. The patrons are very friendly here and I made new friends as soon as I walked in the door. No attitude here!

  • Pros: All are treated equally, karaoke on Thursdays, Fun Atmosphere, friendly patrons
  • Cons: HIgher than Average Drink prices

Great Local Bar

by aviv2b

Great neighborhood place. I've been going to Ginger's since it opened. I love the atmosphere because it is local. I've never had any problem with the bartenders. In fact, in my experience, they have been very nice and generous. The bar owner is a wonderful woman and friendly and caring with her patrons.

Point taken about the Guinness! Definitely not the drink to order. In addition, a good tap beer for happy hour and/or a decent drink special would be appreciated. That aside, in the summer it especially nice as all the softball teams come in for drinks and hanging out. Saturday night is a little more of a pick up night but generally the vibe is relaxed and friendly.

This is a really local joint and can probably feel a little off putting for a visitor but if you get past your first drink and decide to stay, chances are you expect someone to chat with you or be receptive to you initiating conversation.

The bar is also animal friendly-so bring your pooch for a drink.

  • Pros: nice neighboorhood bar, friendly bar owner, good mix of people-racially diverse, relaxed atmosphere
  • Cons: could have better beer specials, better lighting in the room with the pool table

Indoor and Outdoor fun

by jessicanyc

Ginger's bar is a fabulous place to be. Happy hour specials every single day (from 5-8); FREE barbeque on Sunday's; a "constantly growing" jukebox; the outdoor garden; specially brewed ginger-rum and ginger-vodka, not to mention a myriad of other specialties; kareoke on thursdays;even a pool table! The bartenders are each different and unique, much like the eclectic decor of antique chatchkas. My favorite bartender is the weekend Latina, Yvette who pumps the whole bar up with energy. If you've never been, definitely check out ginger's.

please get rid of the attitude!

by brooklyngirl28

i completely agree with previous posts! i understand if bartenders are rude when the place is packed but when there are ten people (or fewer) in the place and you get attitude, it sucks! i used to go here all the time only because it had a good jukebox and i could comfortably hang out there with my girlfriend. as other bars opened in the neighborhood, i left! there are NEVER specials, unless you liked infused vodka and the prices are too high! this place could be so great but the attitude is too much!

  • Pros: atmosphere, juke box
  • Cons: , never a beer special

I GOTTA GIVE IT UP TO GINGERS.......I LOVE IT HERE!! THE BAR STAFF ARE GREAT, I'M NOT PICKING FAVOURITES....I LOVE 'EM ALL EQUALLY. I LOOK FORWARD TO HANGING OUT ON SATURDAY NIGHTS WITH MY MATES AND THE FABULOUS MISS LAUREN, WHO ALWAYS SERVES YOU WITH A SMILE. THERE'S LITTLE ATTITUDE, UNLESS YOU BRING IT. THE JUKEBOX IS SLAMMIN'. THE DRINKS ARE AVERAGELY PRICED...WE ARE IN 'THE SLOPE' AFTER ALL! THE GARDEN IN THE BACK OFFERS BBQ'S 'N' SUCH IN THE SUMMER.......NICE!! COME DOWN & CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF. FUN, FUN, FUN.

  • Pros: LOCAL, GOOD ATMOSPHERE, GREAT JUKEBOX
  • Cons: , NOT OPEN LATE ENOUGH

comfy bar

by lessstone

This bar has been in bklyn for a long time. it's one of the milestones of park slope. The prices are reasonable and typically cheaper than the other bars in the slope. The crowd is mixed with different ages, styles, and attitudes. I've never had a problem with the service there. The weekend bartender is really cool and has been known to make sure the girls are 'safe' from the morons who yell into the bar as they walk by. I've been to Ginger's on various nights during the week and all the bartenders are great and different.

  • Pros: backyard, good prices, atmosphere

Bad Impression

by brooklynite22

I went to Gingers on Valentine's Day with a few friends and I had a really good time, so I thought I'd try it again. I figured since we had a good time when the place was really busy, we'd have a better time on a regular night. Next time I went with more friends and oddly enough, the bartender there was rude from the beginning. She seemed to be bothered that a few of us paid separately and did not get the drinks right even though we repeated our order twice. She proceeded to stare one of my friends down from across the bar. After our drink we left and went to another bar in the neighborhood, where apparently it was common to hear about bad experiences at Gingers. I for one will never go there again and would not recommend it to anyone I know.

  • Pros: neighborhood spot
  • Cons: , High Prices

HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

by dey74

If you like being disrespected then I suggest going to Gingers. I'm from Brooklyn and I went there this weekend with some friends from out of town to show them a good time. Within the first 2 minutes at the bar, the bartender gave us major attitute, questioned our drink selection and got our drinks wrong. Then she has the nerve to call us stupid 12yr olds who don't know how to order drinks! Before we left I let her know that she was very rude and unprofessional. Her only response was to call me a little girl, when I'm 30yrs old. Don't waste your time and money there. Go to Excelcior or Rising Cafe where they know the meaning of customer service. Leave Gingers to the locals who feel they have no choice but to deal with rudeness and attitude.

  • Pros: local
  • Cons: , Overpriced Drinks
