Fun local pub!

by bkgirlsrock

I have been coming to this bar for years, it really has only got better and better! The beer garden is awesome in the summer! I feel badly that some ex-staff have polluted this pub's citysearch page with bogus reviews. I love this place, it's my hideaway from Manhattan folk after a tough week at work.

Best mini-cheeseburgers and wings ever!

  • Pros: Beer garden, fun bartenders

Nice staff, poor management

by gomegan24

I was warned that things were getting bad there, but I have such good memories! Been there twice recently but won't go back. I remember this place years ago (I'm a neighborhood girl) when Kim and Debbie ran it. I miss those guys. My family used to come for brunch, and they were the best. We won't return because the place is not the same. The sleazy manager is the WORST! Ladies, beware. This guy Ruben spends more time flirting with groups of girls and hanging around whether he's been invited to join or not. The last time we stopped in for girls night out after an amazing dinner at Frankie's 457 up the block. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to get a free shot, but is it too much to ask for professional management these days? We watched in amazement as he yelled at his staff, who were very nice to us. He yelled at the waitress for getting an order wrong, I think, and then smiles and winks at us. Ugh. Instead of yelling, why not jump in to help? Later Ruben comes over uninvited, and takes a seat at our table. Wewere polite, and he did buy us a free round of Jameson whiskey, but he wouldn't leave. It's not like we didn't want to be social, we would have been happy to talk to a few cute boys but he was just...not...leaving. What, you never had the manager of a bar buy you drinks before, he asks us. Apparently we were supposed to be impressed because he was manager, which seemed to require the ability to change channels on big-screen TVs, flirt with customers, and chomp on a cookie from the kitchen while walking around. Finally he got the message and left, but so did the service! We ordered drinks but they never came. After 15 minutes we asked “manager” Ruben about our forgotten drinks. “They'll get to it” he says. It's incredible that an owner would want someone like that running their place. I would be mortified if I had a guy like that working for me. I feel sorry for the people who have to work there.

I agree--bad management!

by springtime

My friends and I came in for drinks and food on a Friday night. Our waitress was new (1st day), had too many tables to wait and our order was misplaced. Long story short, after waiting 45 minutes and watching plate after plate of food being delivered to the patrons around us, I went to the manager. I was given a very flip "sorry," blaming the waitress (what kind of manager blames his staff?!!). Another 20 minutes goes by and clearly our food was forgotten. Again. Back to the manager who says, and I quote, "I said I was sorry, what else do you want?" Delivered with an irritated attitude! He stomps off to the kitchen saying it will be ten more minutes. We wait ten, fifteen more minutes and as I'm getting up to find him he approaches with our food in hand. As he sees I am coming to look for him again, he says, "do you want it or not? You don't have to take it, I'll take it back to the kitchen." All delivered with that fine attitude of his. He did comp us for the entire meal, but never had the b***s to come back to our table like a professional. We will never go back and that is really too bad because it's a great neighborhood place. P.S. We left a good tip for that poor waitress. Hope she finds a better job!

Forget if if you don't want to eat meat!

Vegetarians look elsewhere the only thing they have for you is a pasta on one day a week and a mac and cheese that is basically glue.

Beer and food and cable.

by LouGaru

I wondered what happened to MJ. I guess that's why one of the tenants have that banner on the third floor of the bar with her initials on it. I miss that girl.

Hated it, Loved it Hate it again

by DonnaMarieTee

OK,

I'm a life time Carroll Gardens resident and I remember when Hanley's was an " Old man bar"

and then a neighborhood " thug" hang out. I avoided this place because of locals and no ambiance

and drama. Fast forward to winter 2008 I decide to go to Hanley's for SUPER BOWL SUNDAY

with friends from out of town. A lot of the old crowd was gone, the place ws " spruced up" and best of all

I met our fearless leader /bartender/friend ...MJ........ I walked in and found my new HOME.

The winter became more cozy and happier thanks to MJ and the nights at Hanley's.

It was great, she was great and a lot of new staff and new crowd made Hanley's awesome.

As winter turned to spring the manager " Reuben" got a bit of a BIG HEAD and became

a lot less friendly and was changing & adding staff daily. The wait staff seemed to be nice people

who were afraid of their boss " Reuben". One night I paid a waitress a compliment & she begged

me to tell Ruben that she was good because he was being awful & verbally abusive to her

and she feared for her job daily. Bad situation. As the bar crowd grew the vibe in the bar got more

uptight thanks to Ruben. Biggest mistake was when MJ was fired by Ruben in July.

A good business is built on a sense of comfort and community and Ruben ruined this with his

attitude & by letting MJ go. He seems to not respect women staff very much & that forces me to

be offended as a woman & as a friend of MJ. I'm done with Hanley's now. It's too bad that

the owners have such faith in such a poor leader. Look local for MJ the GRET !!

Come on Hanleys

by FuckPJHanleys

M.J. was the best thing that ever happened to Hanley's since it's opening in the 1800's. You would figure a good thing would be allowed to remain a good thing, but somehow, the natural balance of the universe was skewed by the forces of evil or just misjudgment and now there is a great hole in the bar culture of this great neighborhood. We are all suffering for it, and it could so easily be rectified. I hope they fix this soon. I hope Hanley's sets this right
