Best fried chicken. This is the best fried chicken I've ever had. If you're looking for authentic, simple, down home soul food, go to Mitchell's and order the fried chicken with potato salad and green beans and a glass of sweet tea or lemonade. The service is a little slow but that can be forgiven once your plate of delicious fried chicken arrives. If you have room, get a slice of pineapple coconut cake or some peach cobbler. Although sometimes some desserts are unavailable. All this for the low cost of $15. Well worth the trip.
Pepper fried chicken.
Fried chicken? Yes. Fish and chips? If you want. But fried chicken? Yes.
I have not had fried chicken this good anywhere but the Seven Corners Mall in East Falls Church, VA. And that was really a different dish. Salty Hong Kong Fried Chicken.
For the American iteration, try Mitchell! Batter not overbearing as at some places. Light and delicate. And flavored! That's most important. A thin pepper base, but enough of a coating that the chicken retains its inner moisture, and consequently, flavor. Have brought four people on four nights, and each one leaves with the impression that if not the best fried chicken ever tasted, in that pantheon.
Vegetable sides very good, too. Yams especially. Probably lots of brown sugar and molasses. Go to the gym. Eat the yams.
Try to work your way behind the partition. The bar is where the action is, particularly if regular clientele is around. Very friendly staff, and family usually in back watching TV.
Great restaurant atmosphere, and a refreshing change from the $26.50 entree.
A recent dinner for three (we bought a fourth dinner), including nine beers, came to $36 before tip.
