What People Are Saying About Ferdinando's Focacceria Restaurant

In Short – Though Carroll Gardens has changed over the past decade, the old Italian heritage of the neighborhood shines through at this more than 100-year-old restaurant. A fading painted sign hangs above the entrance, and inside is full of weathered wood tables, deco-style tile floors and vintage photographs of the owners. Standbys like spaghetti and parmigiana are available, but the real attraction are Sicilian specialties like stuffed sun-dried tomatoes and a focaccia sandwich made with calf's spleen.
Old Italian says it all

The food was cooked perfectly and it shows in the different sauces. I had the brociole, which brought me back to nona's (grandma's) house. Pasta was al dente,(nice) the pannella was delicious.
Thanks for a special birthday dinner honey.
- Pros: Quick service and pleasant old time atmosphere
All hype and mostly oil

I lived just 1 block away from this place and my friend's italian family (circa 1915) went there regularly back in the days. The dishes were suppose to be true Sicilian.
I tried it at least 4 times and if this is Sicilian at it's best, I rather each McDonalds. Most of the dishes are swimming in oil and bland. Everytime I walked out of there, I always felt unfulfilled.
- Pros: never hand to wait for a table
- Cons: most food swims in oil, less than friendly
Panelle Specials!!

I've been going here with my family for some years now. Ferdinando's is a small italian restaurant with exposed brick walls and old world charm. Pictures of Italy hang on the walls along with photos of the owner with celebrities. They filmed a small scene of The Departed in this place with Leo DiCaprio. I cannot comment on the regular italian dishes that are served here b/c everytime i go i get a Panelle Special. Panelle is chick pea flour made into a pancake and deep fried. The Special is served on a fresh role with ricotta cheese and grated parmigiano. Very delicious. The rice ball special (rice ball with sauce, ricotta and grated cheese) is also a must for an appetizer. Don't forget some potato croquettes, fried calamari and a Manhattan Special to wash it all down with. Expect to see an increase in your pressure and cholesterol after eating all of this fried food, but it is well worth it.
- Pros: Traditional Sicilian Dishes
