The Scene
Honeycomb-colored walls, random wall art, a peek into the kitchen from paper-topped tables--all combine for a casual, thrown-together ambience. The devoted late-night crowd of the neighborhood's bohemia--don't be surprised to hear French drift from table to table--lingers at tables over steaming plates and brimming glasses of wine. On winter nights, a fireplace gently warms a side dining room.
The Food
Classic French cuisine like smoked duck on a bed of frisse or mussels in a simple white wine broth immediately set a poetic mood. Specials--get the perfectly crisped duck confit when offered--should be taken advantage of. Seafood shines at every turn: The generously sized crabcakes arrive crunchy on the outside and meaty on the inside, while tender scallops melt in the mouth. But the rib-eye steak frites with a rich au poivre are especially hard to pass up. Desserts keep up the pace, with an Earl Grey-flavored pot-au-creme taking the cake.

There's a sign in the old Smith St. location saying they've moved to Manhattan at 177 Mulberry St., New York, NY 10013.

I went on 2/13/09 and it was closed as of then. This was a big surprise, since I was actually looking forward to going there. I think they may re-open somewhere in that area. Luckily there was another really good French Restaurant on the same block called Provence en Boite.

I've been told that this was the restaurant that started the wave of talented young chefs coming from Manhattan to Brooklyn in the early 1990s. And after eating here several times, I see why it has become a true revolution. This cozy French bistro has great French comfort food (mussels and Fries, Steve au Poivre) and a great wine list. The wait staff was also extremely accommodating to us recently when we had two little kids in tow. The back garden is great, and the prices are right as well.
