In Short – At this no-frills bakery, young cashiers exchange warm greetings with regular customers and expertly tie up boxes of cookies, cakes, and pastries with red and white twine. A couple of tables give patrons a place to eat, but most take home their custom-decorated birthday cakes, ricotta cheesecakes, and cannolis--or traditional sweets like sfogliatelli (ricotta-filled pastries), spumenti (hazelnut meringue cookies), and pasticciotto (miniature cream pies). In the summertime, passers-by order Italian ices through a sidewalk window.

I drive 45 miles twice a month to buy their cheescake. Just try it and see why, and the neighborhood is a great place to walk down Court St. for some of the best Pizza slices great afternoon visit to take out of town guest who would never have ventured out of the typical tourist areas of Manhattan.

Best Cheese Cake EVER
by Johnsongirl at Citysearch
Ignore Juniors. Avoid zabars. Monteleones in Carroll Gardens has the BEST cheesecake! They have the marble, and the almond (dusted all around the outside) and the fruit - but the BEST is the classic brooklyn cheesecake in the big slab - they cut off how much you want. Brown on top and CrEAMY inside and not too sweet - just cheese and cheese -- yumm yumm. THey also have these little mini cheesecakes - about 2 inches round, that are perfect for presents or gifts. Just 2 blocks from the Bergen line -- go eat your cheesecake in the park next door. And take the other one home.
- Pros: Great pastries and cheesecake!
- Cons: Sometimes the tv is too loud
Fantastic Italian Cheesecake, Ices, and mini-pastries
by varangian at Citysearch
I love Monteleone's. Got to know it when I was spending a lot of time with clients in the Carrol Gardens (South Brooklyn) neighborhood. As one who doesn't have a particularly strong sweet-tooth, this place awakened me to the wonders of an old-world tradition pasticceria. They have the best Italian cheesecake in the City, even according to the Times. The ices in the summertime are homemade, refreshing and wonderful. The cakes and mini pastries are perfect for any occasion. Just a great little gem of a place. The head baker, Lenny, is an artist of the highest caliber. If I ever leave New York, I will seriously miss this place.
- Pros: Neighborhoody, authentic, excellent pastries and desserts
- Cons: none
