MIXED FEELINGS. Althought the food is tasty it is on the greasy side

but they do make a nice pasta and eggplant !!.

In my opinion, the service is not that great.

They really should train better the people who wait on the tables.

Would not go there again. Well, I went there with my boyfriend and was disappointed. The service was terrible. Our waiter made us wait about 20 minutes before he took our order while other customers who came after us got their food and had eaten already.

The food was not good too. My boyfriend's meatloaf a way better then theirs although he cooks very seldom.

Bottom line-Waste of money, waste of time, and horrible service.

AWESOME. This place is great. Kindly ignore the previous reviewer. THIS IS NOT A ROMANTIC ITALIAN RESTAURANT. This is a sicilian eatery. You will get a relaxed atmosphere somewhere between a pizzeria and a regular restaurant. However, the food is AWESOME. You cannot get these dishes anywhere in NYC. If you can find one or two of them, they are not this good. The panelle special is excellent as is the vastedde. I don't know where you can get pasta con sarde anywhere and it is great. Everything is really cheap. I recommend starting out with a riceball special (split it). All of their sandwiches will fill you up alone. I am always stuffed and hardly spend anything. If you want to eat some sicilian specialties that you will not find anywhere else, Joe's is the place.

Huge Disappointment. I have lived not far from this restaurant for many years. After driving past it for so long and based on good word of mouth plus excellent written reviews, I decided to try it. Big mistake. The interior of the restaurant was reminiscent of Subway. Formica booths, little atmosphere. However, the food could have easily made up for the lack of decor -- if it had been good. We had a mixed salad. The lettuce had obviously been sitting in the dressing for hours. After our soggy salad we had stuffed chicken - two smallish grisly tasteless pieces. The pasta was OK but nothing special. You had better be a garlic lover because I have never seen so many garlic pieces in a pasta sauce before. Our vegetable fared better - it wasn't awful and our dessert was frozen. True, it was a tartufo, but I have never had one that was rock hard. I felt like asking for a knife so that I could cut it. I will never, ever go back to this establishment.

Best Substitute for Sicily. Joe's of Avenue U is dripping with old-world Italy (not in marketing, as with every forgettable Manhattan clone, but in food and spirit). From the mind-blowing riceballs and panelle roll (chickpeas and ricotta, yum), to the veal involtini stuffed with fried potato (just like in Palermo), pasta with sardines, and even simple sausage, Joe's is one of the great dining establishments in Brooklyn. A carafe of house wine will cost you less than an appetizer at a city restaurant. Get the Manhattan Special, too.

Best of Old Time Sicilian Food Like your Grandmother Used to Make. The best of Old time authentic Sicilian food. They even can ship their delicacies to wherever! I used to live in NY and went to Joe's many times a year. Since moving to Florida, they now ship my Sicilian food to me. Vastedda never tasted so good! Humm, now if I could only figure out how they could send me their freshly made delicious tripe and peas I'd be happy as a fig on a fig tree!

Great Sicilian Home-Style Cooking. The BEST comfort Sicilian food in the whole City of New York! If you love good food, warm and friendly service, not too fancy, and definitely not too pricey! This is the place to go for authentic Sicilian cooking. Tripe, Panelle, Pulpo, Vastedde, riceballs , potato croquets. Too many to list, but to die for. Went there last week, had to attend a funeral in Brooklyn, made it there with a 1/2 hour to spare, had another couple from NJ with us, they couldn't stop raving about the food, Paul even kissed the waitresses arm! The food is soo delicious, the 4 of us ate till we couldn't move, and took home food too, all for around $70.00. The best thing to get there is the Panelle Special, which is fried panelle (flattened chickpeas1?!) that are deepfried, and topped with ricotta cheese, and another grated cheese on top, sandwitched in the best tasting rolls. Get the 3 potato croquets with that, and a riceball, and drink a Manhattan Special. You will be in heaven! It is worth the trip from anywhere to eat at Joes!
