“Children run screaming up and down the aisle from other parts of the restaurant, which was a huge turnoff, particularly when we went out so late to eat to escape the abrasive restaurant "family" crowd and to have a romantic evening.”
“If the food was outstanding, perhaps these prices could be justified.”
“This is a great place to take the whole family.”
“No, it is not a fancy place for romantic first date, but it has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, and very child friendly.”

“Prices are outrageous, service is slow.”
Food Not as Good as It Was.
The prices went up; the portions got smaller; and the staff were hired without any skills. Most of the waiters and waitresses are rude or simply ignore you once they take your order. By the time the bus boy tells one waiter that you are looking for your waiter and someone actucally puts into motion the exploration.....your food is cold and not very inviting. Seems if you speak the language of the server your service is spot on....kinda discrimination in my book and simply unacceptable behavior. My money is as good as anyone else....I expect the same respect and I shouldn't have to seek you out; you should be coming to my table to see if everything is alright.
AND, ALL OF YOU SERVERS.....STOP USING YOUR BARE HANDS TO HANDLE THE BREAD. Why are those handling food required to use gloves, but you feel it's fine to grab the bread that I will be putting in my mouth with your bare hands. And, when this was brought to one's attention, all the waiters kept looking at out table and talking about us. Sorry.....I accept, I expected too much! Go read the Health Department code and clean up your act!
Been coming since the min ;80s....what a shame how it's gone down hill.
Great Food. Good food, service isn't so great, too slow. Rude Waiters. Hard time for valet to get the car.
service staff is unprofessional:(((. My friend just told me he'll never come back again to Sahara, actually, he liked everything but service.. the server DEMANDED him to pay more tips in front of the whole restaurant! that is so low low class service, guys!! IT SHOULDN'T BE YOUR CLIENT'S CONCERN if you don't pay you servers basic. Very embarrassing and unprofessional from your side. He left 10% tips in order to be so embarrassed. very dissapointing..
Horrible Experience.
Just came back from this restaurant with a horrible experience. So, I couldn’t wait to share with others before they get hit by it too.
It was five of us talking about, while eating, that the waitress was kind of pushing us to order our food and never came back for the whole time to ask us if we needed anything else or all was okay. She was standing by the door and we had to ask someone else for our check. There was a message printed on the bottom of the check for suggested tips 10 to 15 percent. We left about 10% tips about of courtesy since we were not happy and were disappointed with the service.
Here is the HORRIBLE PART of the story. As we were leaving, the waitress called me from the back and stopped me and then told me that I can’t leave so less tip in a loud voice. I was shocked and pretty embarrassed and immediately I asked to talk to a manager and he came over to help me. Instead of trying to find the reason as a manager and solve it, he was also telling me that the waiters and waitress work for tips. That made very upset and I explained the manager his job and how we should have been treated. I am glad he finally realized and apologized to us.
But the bottom line is that this restaurant is not really a place where you can eat with any expectation of hospitality. Things are dirty as well and I think specially the porch section is not healthy at all and it’s not fun to eat while flies are flying around.
Thais was my third and LAST visit to Sahara. Peace!
Very Dirty!. My husband's co-worker recommended this place to him and he decided to take me for dinner one night. It horrible! It was so unclean; the tables were dirty, insect was flying around. I just wanted to get out of there, but my husband's sake I stayed. The food was OK, nothing to brag about. I will never go there again.
Lower your expectations.
I heart friends tell me about how this place "use to be" amazing etc. I just went for the first time today with my wife and I've got to say for the price, the menu was certainly worth it.
Waiters were quick, food was good, and price was fair.
Only concern would be the place itself. It seemed rather un-clean; the tables, walls, etc.
I'd go again, but only if a friend wanted to.
Not What It Used To be.
I lived in Brooklyn for many years & started going there when they first opened up. They had great food at a decent price.
They kept on expanding and the quality of the food had not faltered for years. I lived 3 blocks away and would walk there on nice days (or if with the family on cold days, drive)
Then over the past two years, the quality of service and quantity of the food has diminished. This review is for the last time I ate there this past April or May. First of all, the size of the portions (except for maybe the salads) has decreased in size. I was amazed at how little meat and RICE they had on the plate. The food was still okay, but much smaller portions than expected for myself and the person I was with (and I had already known (from previous visits) that the portions were smaller, but it was rediculous. There have also been a lot of other Turkish & Mideastern restaurants that have opened up in Brooklyn over the past decade that are much better than Sahara with much better service.
I would have complained to the waiter, but he was no where to be seen. After taking the order, he brought out the salad & appetizer, then dissapeared. Someone else brought out the entree. The busboy brought out our drinks after waiting for 10 minutes for the waiter to return. Then nonone had come around after that to offer any more drinks. Ten minutes after finishing our food (which was obvious), we asked another waiter for the check, then a few minutes later, we asked the busboy. Finally, after another 5-10 minutes, and both of us were already in our jackets the original waiter brought the check. I left him a whole 47 cents tip for the wonderful service he gave us (NOT). I knew it was not our night when we walked in there, and the person at the counter ignored us and sat the people that walked in behind us.
I have not been back since. Nor has any of my family and friends that all live around the area. It is a shame, I used to go there a lot, but it is not worth it any more.
Sahara, around for a quarter of a century since 1986.
