Worst salon experience EVER!.
I have natural (non-relaxed) hair and had the misfortune of visiting this place. These people are unprofessional, rude and downright incompetent. It is a LONG story about how they damaged my hair
just attempting to blowdry it, and you can look for my full review on YELP (the one that starts "worst salon experience EVER!") but the short version is I would not recommend this salon to ANYONE who cares more about the health of their hair than how it looks.
1/ not all Aveda-concept salons are the same, and if everyone in that salon is as awful at doing natural hair as the 2 people I encountered, Aveda really should consider revoking their name 2/ if someone recommends a stylist don't assume everyone who works at the salon is on the same level 3/ If you have natural kinky or curly hair, do not trust a stylist who still segregates in this day and age between 'black' and 'white' hair, 4/ If a salon smells like burnt grease, or they start your experience by telling you 'we aint got no hot water', its probably best to keep it moving! 5/Trust your instincts!!! If something doesn't seem right, LEAVE!! 6/ If you absolutely HAVE to go to G's, do NOT use Jamie or Joel!!!!
That is all.…
My Salon for the past 7 years....Amazing....
Ok...I've just read the negative reviews below and I'm shocked. I've been going to G's Urban Styles since 2002...I migrated from having chemical hair to starting my locs with Garvin and Raymond (both
of my stylists). I have spent years at "ghetto" salons all over Brooklyn...when my hair was permed.....and had become fed up with the assembly line treatment at the Dominican Salons.....so when my sister in law recommended G's....I jumped at the chance....
I have long, gorgeous, healthy locs because of G's. I've been using Aveda products since the 80's....and for the fact that G's is an Aveda salon...and my hair can be treated with the same great products I use at home - there is no question as to why I wouldn't go here. Garvin and Raymond have treated me with respect and love over the years....and yes.... I am one of those "regulars"....but I do make appointments....and I do wait...because they are worth it. What hair salon have you gone to that doesn't have some gossip? or a long wait.....I'm not saying that its acceptable.....but I think some people have entirely too high of an expectation for a salon. At G's....the receptionists are well trained - friendly..and they always follow up with you.. If your stylist is running late....they always come and chat with you...and apologize... or they'll call your mobile to give you a heads up.....When a previous client is late....it backs everyone up....that's understood....I too have spent a few hours in G's....but after going to many other salons....I always return to them.
G's new salon/spa around the corner on Bergen is magnificent....I've had my hair done there as well ...and eyebrows done downstairs at the spa..... nothing but exceptional service.
I've admired and watched all of the stylists in G's for years.....they are sharp...and have exceptional cutting/styling skills.....I'm always infatuated with how the girls who have chemically treated hair always leave with bouncy/soft curls....and their hair always looks so light and feathery.....and for those with natural styles - they too leave with great styles and colour. I've seen some disasters walk in the door.....and then leave looking like models... and I'm serious.....
As for the attiude of Garvin....I beg to differ....
Even when he is most busy - he always finds the time to greet new clients....and advise or assist with what you're looking for.....and he will give you an honest opinion....whether you like it or not.....I appreciate that....and I think most people will.
I'm sorry for the young woman's experience below....
But I have been a loyal client of G's over the years.....and have enjoyed the salon...his previous "G Spa".. on Flatbush Ave....and most recently.....his new salon/spa on Bergen.
Do not let the negative reviews sway you.....
Give it a try....and if its not for you....move on.....
But I will never leave G's.....…
Rude and unprofessional owner and stylists - a mess!.
I have gone to G's several times. This salon is more ghetto than upscale, don't let the decor fool you! Over time I grew disatisfied with the nasty attitudes of the stylists, their lack of
motivation to show up on time and the owner's lack of professionalism. All of the stylists, including Garvin, have nasty , bigger than life egos, as if they do not realize they are hairstylists, nothing more, nothing less.
On more than one occasion I sat and waited for more than an hour for my stylist to show up, or for whoever the manager is in that place, to even ask for someone to wash my hair. The vibe in the salon is very rude and negative, as if they are doing you a favor by showing up late, being nasty, then finally doing your hair.
These sub par stylists are oblivious to the fact that NYC has thousands of "better, upscale" salons a woman can go to. The owner of the salon (Garvin) is usually not there or late. They don't handle complaints very well either. Stylists argue in this salon and they seem to have their favorite customers who they take right on the spot (not in order of arrival or appointment time), although everyone has appointments.
G, the owner, often tries to push you to have chemical services done that you did not request so that he can make more money. G will try to bully you into upgrading your service, while you're in the chair, with your hair still wet and everything! He once said to me in a very nasty tone while he was styling my hair, (after I said "No" to having a chemical service done), "Well, I'm going to make money off of you whether you have it done or not."
The stylists at G's mostly like the women customers who are regulars and who have very short hair and need a relaxer touch up, this equals less work and more $ for the stylists/salon.
G and his stylists love to complain and gossip. Some of his stylists gossip and complain about G and things that go on in the salon, to customers. It is a mess! I've had a better experience going to the Dominicans who get you in an out in less than an hour, for a total of $25-$30 and they don't involve you in their foolishness and personal dramas.
G has opened up a new salon, but I heard there's never anyone in there. It's probably his negative karma and toxic personality, keeping new (smarter) clients away.
After having several dissatisfying experiences with this salon, I will never go back again. Ladies go somewhere else where your money and head of hair will be appreciated!…
Superior Hair Care. This was my first time visiting the salon. The receptionist was nice and professional when I called to make the appointment. Vanessa is great she was a little backed up and kept checking to make sure I was ok with my wait. G started my hair for her. Vanessa takes her time to make sure you hair looks perfect. I was very happy with my hair and felt very comfortable in the salon.…
Bad, Bad , Bad Did I say BAD?. I had to wait more than two hours. Ok. Once the stylist got there he didn't even say sorry for being SOOOOOO LLLLAAAAATTTTTTEEEEE.
