Terrible !!. I should have listened to my wife and gone to our usual spot in Bay Ridge , Sushi Hana (if you like Sushi go there. Very good) We had just finished shopping at Target a few blocks away and were feeling hungry. We had been here several years ago and while it wasnt the best then , it was terrible this time. To be fair I think the service was the worst part of it. The place was barely full and we had to wait just to have our order placed. We were never offered a drink while we waited- I was dying for a cold beer- but got the standard glass of tap water. I think someone in charge may have spotted me rubbing the back of neck in frustration and sent the waitress over. The waitress appeared bothered by having to do her job and take our order. She didnt write anything down and of course asked me , "did you say white or yellow rice"? My wife ordered a vodka with a SPLASH of cranberry. Talk about watered down drinks-more cranberry than vodka. I ordered the Pernil (Roast Pork) which comes with rice and beans and an order of plantains but the waitress took upon her self to charge me 3 bucks for a seperate order. I finshed my beer and my wife her drink and it seemed like forever before we got a refill. The pork was ok but my wifes shrimp mofongo lacked flavor and had hardened pieces of plantains in it. i used the bathroom and of course it was a horror show down there. Sticky disgusting floors , graffitti on walls , no paper towels and the stall doors didnt close. I paid almost a hundred bucks for this. Definitely not worth it and very overpriced. So in closing , Save your money and skip this place. The only good thing about El Viejo Yayo ( and its not good because of them) is the Salsa music.
GREAT!!!!!!!!!. I went with my daughter and fiance and the food was wonderfully great. The service was good, the music was to dance for. I'm taking her back on her graduation to celebrate, can't wait.
48 THUMBS UP !!!!.
I had to put together a Sweet 16 Dinner in a short amount of time with a total of 48 guests and a set budget. Jerry, the manager, not only worked with me to create a fabulous menu that had skirt steak, grilled fish and lemon chicken that met my goal but he was present on the day of the event to make sure everything went as smooth as possible. He even stayed 1 hour past closing with us and did not even bat an eyelash (nor a fee) at the extra time that we had taken to wrap it up. I had guests that ranged from 5 yrs old to 65 years old and they can't stop talking about how delicious the food was. The people that tended to the party were wonderful, polite, well mannered and extremely detailed at making sure all my guests were having the best time possible.
This restaurant has a name that is titiled in Spanish for a reason; they Master Spanish Food. I must admit that I can't comment on the bad review given to this restaurant for their pasta, their custom to not bring the salad first, their A La Vodka sauce, etc ... because if I wanted Italian food served to me in the order that Americans are used to eating I would not go to a Spanish restaurant. I definitely can not comment on the doggie bag mix up since I would never ask to take home food I didn't enjoy.
If you want to experience what it is to eat delicious Spanish food, served just like "abuelita" serves it, with all the excellent flavor that Latino Spices have to offer forcing you to eat every last scoop until you just can't breathe than I recommend this place 110%.
I'm moving my next company meeting to this location because I'm possitive it will be a crowd pleaser !!
Don't believe the hype..
Mediocre food and poor service - and all for $75.00
I'm sure there are better restaurants in the area. I suggest going elsewhere.
They brought the salads with the entrees and then acted surprised that we wanted the salads first. The salads were worse than a diner, the A La Vodka sauce was flavorless and the grilled fish entree was nothing more than a whole fish put on the grill. No spice. No flavor. No work. And for $22?
Don't trust the 5 star reviews. There was nothing that wonderful about this place.
p.s. we asked to doggy bag some rice and leftover pasta - why would they throw them into the same container, and ruin both? Answer - poor service
good food. I ordered the oxtail stew and it was really good. fried stuffs are good, too. a good place to have a taste of something different.
BEST SPANISH FOOD IN BROOKLYN. My family and I have been to El Viejo Yayo over the years at least a dozen times. As newly weds (before their expansion) and as an entire family(after the expansion). We even had our daughters baptism party there. The food is AWESOME! The portions are LARGE, you get up from the table full with left-overs for tomorrows meal. The staff is friendly and efficient. One does not have to have knowledge of Spanish cuisine, the staff will enlighten you. There is something for everyone, even those who have dietary restrictions. My family and I give this restaurant two thumps up!!!
This place is Great.. This has to be the best latin restaurant in Brooklyn, it certianly is the biggest one. The prices are great. It is one of New Yorks best kept secrets. I couldnt believe how big the restaurant was is has romantic spots and it also perfect for the kids.
Great Dining Experience. I have been to El Viejo Yayo 5 times and have had a great dining experience each time. The service is wonderful. The waitresses are so nice and will even help you pick a meal if you are new to spanish food. The food is delicious and not too expensive. The soft music is delightful and the interior is nicely decorated. I give it 2 thumbs up.
