Hand-carved wooden marionettes make merry for the kids.. The Scene This converted storefront off Park Slope's two main drags sports a quiet, understated facade. The uninitiated might easily overlook the hidden theater behind the darkened grated windows. On weekends, the space accommodates up to 75 audience members in the bright-green main room. What attracts them all are the marionettes made by founder Nicolas Coppola, as they faithfully reenact classic children's lit and international folk tales.
The Background In 1976, Macy's constructed a marionette theater especially for the troupe, which in turn performs a holiday show at the shopping monolith every year. Puppetworks is involved in art as well as commerce--having performed with the Little Orchestra Society, St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, the Orchestra da Camera and even the Brooklyn Philharmonic.
