Bigoted staff. My son and I went into Casa Calamari this evening and had a horrific experience. The older man behind the counter kept us waiting for no particular reason. When my five year old son piped up to tell him that he liked to go to the Bay Ridge Casa Calamari, the man came out from behind the counter, got right in my son's face and said "What are you, the King of the Jews? You betrayed us and went to Bay Ridge?" I don't know what he could have meant by this, but the sheer hostility of the statement directed at a five year old was one of the worst experiences of bigotry I've ever encountered. After this I had to explain to my son that some people don't like Jews, which was something that he did not know up until this time. Don't eat at this place unless you like to support bigots.
HORRIBLE DELIVERY SERVICE. i order out all the time. this had to be the worse place to order from. they had my order all wrong, the food was cold and the delivery guy didn't have enough change. after i called and told them i was paying with a hundred. simply the worse delivery service in the area.
Worst food and atmosphere in Brooklyn - and I mean the WORST - UGH!!!!!!!!!!. Casa Calamari has to be the worst restaurant in the five boroughs, if you want to even call it a restaurant. It was more like a romper room for the unruly. Noisy, noisy, noisy..............3 glasses fell to the floor and broke and the noisiest kids that you could ever imagine. The parents said not a word to the little buggers and neither did the so-called management. They just let it go on and on, annoying the paying customers. The food was just as bad. My penne ala vodka had no taste and my girlfriend's pasta dish was the same. So bad that we had to douse the food with grated cheese just to get a little flavor going. Horribe isn't the word. How does this joint stay in business?????????????? And DIRTY, DIRTY, DIRTY. The cleaning staff must have been off that night. Or they just don't care. I tend to think it's the latter. If they go under due to the crappy economy, they will not be missed. So Italian food-loving people out there, pass this dump right up. You'll be glad you did. There are many good places out there. This is NOT one of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and by the way, I mentioned to our waitress that we needed coffee. THREE TIMES I HAD TO REMIND HER!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it still NEVER came!!!!!!!!! I just said forget it and we left. Was it that busy? Well yes, it was the band playing that night. It certainly wasn't the food. The band was great, but Casa Calamari was not. Far from it. And words of advice to the Generation Gap----pick a better restaurant please. This place is down-right awful and the owner/management could not give a flying hoot I do, so I will avoid this sorry place at all costs.
Horibble & Rodents. This restaurant is horrible! It's obvious that the people who are writing these so called "great" reviews are friends/family of Casa Calamari's staff. The owner and wait staff are rude, and have rodents! I really suggest you do not come here. If you turn your attention from the owner yelling in the middle of the resturant to the corner of the floors you can actually see rodents scatter. There's plenty of delicious pizzerias & brick oven places that are way better and CLEANER!
Is an above average pizza place.. Casa is one of those local place where you go for a relax, casual atomsphere and enjoy fresh pizza while you at it. So far the visits I had with this place been pleasant and enjoyable. They made their food direct with simple ingredents so it is nothing fancy and that's how they keep their prices low. Of course you can always find a better place but you just have to pay for it. Sorry to hear that some reviewers had some bad experience in this local joint. As someone who loved in Brooklyn and still visit on a regular bases, I still think this place is a place to go after a softball game or a football game with bunch of friends. There's no up tight wait staffs that watch over your every bits, and they are very friendly. If you are willing to make friends (trust me it will help in any place you go) with the wait staff you will enjoy this place alot more. If you think you are better then them only b/c you are the customer and they are here to serve you, you will never enjoy this place. B/c they are truely very friendly and the food is above average. How can someone say their pizza is mircowaved, I mean they make it in an open kitchen.
Good place to take kids or adults who wouldn't notice that this is awful Italian food.
I would only recommend this place to a person looking for a pizza place for kids. It's spacious, the atmosphere is not romantic in the slightest, and kids love any kind of pizza they can get their hands on! The fact that this place is often busy at peak hours and on weekends makes it pitifully obvious how ignorant Brooklynites can really be about food. In fact, I've seen several amazing restaurants close their doors in the 3 years I've lived in Bay Ridge. How Casa Calamari has hung on is beyond me!
Personally, I think the food is abysmal. I've been twice and honestly can't say what made me give it a second chance. Avoid the pizza at all costs - it almost tasted like microwaved old pizza that was never good in the first place. The calamari is ridiculously over-battered and greasy; the result being that it tastes more of batter than squid.
The service is awful, but certainly not rude. I did not find it filthy like the other reviewer, but I'm not denying that it may be. I think the poor food quality may have distracted me from the surroundings a bit.
FILTHY DIRTY AND VERY BAD FOOD. Stay far away from this place. The food is really poor quality. There were live insects in our food and the mgmt didnt even apologize. The place is filthy. The food horrific and the service is awful too
This has to be the best Brick Oven pizza in NYC. Not the fanciest place but very cozy and very friendly staff. Prices do not break the bank. Excellent brick oven pizza and perfect pasta. We had the seafood ravioli and the tortellini alfredo. Our table shared a pie with the portobella mushrooms and another pie baked with fresh clams and fresh tomatoes. Unbelievable! The pizza is without a doubt one of the best i have ever had in NY.
Surprisingly GREAT food!!!. I'm a softy for Italian food, so one day searching through Citysearch, we found Casa Calamari. The reviews for this place seemed so positive but once we got there, we had no expectations. The ambiance was non existant! We went in, got seated next to the window next to a hanging advertisment..and gave each other looks like wow, the reviews do not tell the whole story. Our minds were changed once a waiter popped over to take our order. The warmest service you will ever get anywhere! You can tell the waiter was exhausted by the weekend dinner crowd..it was 9pm when we got there..and he still kept his upbeat personality to make our experience amazing! The food was to die for..i have eaten a lot of italian food..and this is definately in my top 5 experiences! Awesome awesome place!
The best for the price. We love this place. The food is good old fashioned home cooking like Grandma's house. Their pizza is better than any of the other famous brick oven places in NY. We go there often and highly recommend it.
