The Vibe
If you only visit one gallery in the neighborhood, this should be it. Artist and sign painter Joe Amrhein opened Pierogi in 1994 on the site of a former loading dock when Williamsburg was hardly more than a fledgling arts scene. Pierogi is now an established stop on the New York gallery trail; expect to see struggling locals sharing turf with big names like Lawrence Weiner.
The Goods
This is an excellent jumping-off point for emerging artists. Along with a regular exhibition schedule, Pierogi maintains extensive flat files, and many a dealer thumbs through them in search of new talent. The files are also a big draw for beginning collectors; a piece of work rarely costs more than a few hundred dollars, of which Amrhein takes a modest 20 percent. If you still need a reason to go, the openings have free beer and, of course, pierogis.
