Expect no frills at this working-man's steakhouse, a local landmark since 1887. Diners don't even get menus unless they ask; waiters are tersely matter-of-fact. The dining rooms, with their exposed beams and worn wooden furniture, are far brighter than they ought to be. But don't complain too loudly: Luger's fiercely loyal regulars will defend the place as passionately as they would their own mothers. Everyone orders the hand-picked, dry-aged porterhouse steaks, and the butter-sluiced slabs arrive on lava-hot platters (remove the steak quickly to avoid overcooking). German fried potatoes and…
Bad food, it is all a hype

Upon arrival, we’ve been seated promptly. This was our first time at Peter Lugers. We ordered tomato “salad” (One large tomato sliced into 5 slices - $12.00). I know they claim it is a special grown tomato. Sorry, my husband and I didn’t notice anything special about it, very average tasting tomato. We also ordered spinach and steak for 2. Spinach tasted like a 99c defrosted pack of spinach with no cream or anything else in it. So I did not eat it at all, my husband ate some. So, we told ourselves, maybe salads and spinach is not their specialty, steak must be great here(All great reviews????). Our steak arrived. It looked nice, large enough for too. Taste was a huge disappointment for both of us. We’ve made reservations 3 wks in advance to eat this.. Steak was pretty tough and had no taste. Their “Peter Luger” sause, is a regular shrimp cocktail sauce you can buy at any supermarket. Ok, I can’t compare it to too many other fancy/expansive stakehouses, but even “Outback” is WAY better. We’ve been to Del Frisco’s in NYC, and it was great, a bit more expansive than Peter Lugers. So, at Peter Lugers our bill came to $135.00 (we also ordered 2 coffees and 1 desert). Final Note: Bad, Bad, Bad food. Our server was nice. It is all a hype, nothing else. Their upstairs section was totally empty, but they were telling people that asked if they could be seated –NO, you need to make reservations.
- Pros: service was nice
- Cons: bad, bad food
Excellent

I have read some bad reviews about Peter Lugers and was a bit apprehensive. It was many years since going there my first time and I was a little young to really remember what it was like. I like a good steak and Peter Lugers has it. I do a lot of traveling around the world and will say I have had better steak. This is mainly because the Filet Mignon is my favorite and they are noted for their Porterhouse. The steak was done perfectly the way we ordered and the German Potatoes and the Creamed Spinach were very good. Before dinner I had a couple of cocktails which were superb. As for the staff, I found them to be friendly, helpful and, all and all, quite good at their job. It was a bit bright for me as I like a little more mood to the atmosphere. An absolute great place to go with your buddies for a steak and drinks.
- Pros: Steak, Drinks, Service, Time waited for seating.
- Cons: lighting, very bright. better for hanging out with buddies.
Worst dining experience on any continent
by shelleyfoster
They deserve zero stars, instead a black hole, as this was the worst experience I have had at a steakhouse let alone a restaurant anywhere in the world. The menu was limited, the steak offered was only porterhouse and served in bulk, so must be done to meet all diners’ needs. It was fatty and chewy and tasteless and drenched in oil. The vegetables were no better. The famous 'German' potatoes were left over hash browns at best. The waiter who served us, was a savage, he servied me by moving my hands out of the way with a knife and serving spoon to get at my plate, cutting my knuckles. After rushing us away out immediately after eating, they did not accept a credit card, and the debit machine was (as others have reviewed) was not working, which embarrassed both of the men in our party as they had not told us prior to seating the limited payment method, hence they were sent to the bank machine like criminals for cash, while the restaurant held me behind for ransom. During my hostage taking I asked to speak with the manager, and on complaining to the manager saying politely this was the worst experience in fine dining I have ever had and explaining how embarassed I was, rather than receiving an apology, I instead was scolded. To quote the manager "most leave saying it's the best meal I've ever had', perhaps this is so for the odd savage that stops in. This was the word experience and cannot be rated well by savvy New Yorkers nor international guests who have dined the world, this is the absolutely no better than a road side diner with cranky bad service, bad food, and a horrible attitude. They do not deserve your business. In fact charging 300+ for four to dine on cheap California wine, gristly steak and overcooked potatoes with offensive and aggressive service is nothing short of robbery.
- Pros: none
- Cons: Horrible service, poor qualilty meat, diner atmosphere
