Editorial Review for The Pearl Room – by Dana Bowen

The Scene
It's the liveliest spot along Bay Ridge's thriving Third Avenue dining scene. Gussied-up Gen-Xers nosh on homemade potato chips and mingle to piped-in pop music in the bar's oversized booths. An elegant dining room, with flowing satin drapes, a flickering fireplace and dramatic ceilings frescoed with abstract aquatic art, is far more formal than the leafy outdoor patio.

The Food
The seafood-dominant fusion menu features standout starters, like super-fresh raw bar oysters, crispy citrus-pepperoncini calamari and flaky lobster-mushroom tart with fiery chorizo and caramelized onions. Pastas include shellfish-stocked linguine with tomato sauce, and an excellent homemade cheese ravioli--all are available in half portions. The best of the oversized entrees include supple roasted lobster and grilled filet mignon with incredible pancetta-scallion mashed potatoes; horseradish salmon sweet-tempered with apple hash; and Parmesan-basil lamb over creamy polenta. Finish with "Danny's Balls"--deep-fried, doughy spheres filled with melted chocolate.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

There's a $4-a-plate charge for sharing entrees, but considering the gargantuan entrees and $20-plus price tags, you may do well to split them anyway.

What to Drink

Calina merlot, a South American red with concentrated berry-fruit flavors, may be the best wine value in the five boroughs ($22 per bottle, $6 by the glass).

Parking

Take advantage of the free valet.

Where to Sit

Request a table in the lovely outside patio, weather permitting.

The Extras

The bar stays open late on weekends.

We had a lame experience. The server was rather rude and inattentive in a half empty restaurant. We don't ask for much when we dine out just remember to take our order and check back when we get our food. Hopefully that server has moved on. More importantly, the grilled black angus shell steak was a little underwhelming. I don't know, maybe this joint was a little built up for me and my friend. Overall, a pretty standard seafood restaurant. I don't think it's worth the price.

The Pearl Room is the closest thing I have had the pleasure of experiencing to genuine home cooking. Being away from my family for so long, it's great to be able to walk in such a welcoming and beautiful establishment and be able to truely enjoy everything on the menu. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every meal that I have ordered. The Pearl room is a great place to impress a date or to enjoy brunch, a beer and sunday football. The hosts Nancy and Anthony make sure you feel like apart of the family and the bartenders and wait staff make sure you feel appreciated. I never have to think about were I'm going for dinner or a couple of drinks and company. My first choice is always The Pearl Room!!!!!

Pros: Food, Service, Valet parking, ambience!

Cons: I honestly can't think of one
