In Short – In a neighborhood known for its French bistros, Chez Oskar is the grand dame on the block. Neighbors wave to each other from the sidewalk seating, and inside, wood tables host casual dates and group outings. The menu is steeped in Bistro Basics 101, with lunch options like mussels in white wine and a variety of sandwiches like lamb and arugula or proscuitto and mozzarella. Dinner highlights the restaurant's French pedigree with options like escargot, nicoise salad, and traditional burgers and steak.
This is a truly terrible restaurant

I used to go to chez oskar becuase of it's great location. I loved to sit outside and have brunch and say hi to all my friends in the neighborhood. Over time I grew tired of waiting half an hour for a cup of coffee. It's very frustrating! There was one waitress who was wonderful but if you did not get her, then you would get terrible service. The final straw was when I went on a sunday night to have drinks at the bar. My friend and I spent around 80$. I put half in cash and half on card. The bartender took the bill, pocketed the cash as her tip and charged the card for the full amount. First of all, you don't typically tip 20% for drinks at the bar- but even so for someone to assume that 40$ of an 80$ tab is tip is ridiculous and I consider it stealing. I asked her if that is what she did and she said yes and by the look in her eye I could tell she knew that I was upset and she did it fully knowing that was not our intention, but she didn't care. I was so upset I just left. I was too angry to make her give the money back. I would have specificed but i was in the bathroom when she came over and got the check. Her behaviour is indicative of an overall attitude at chez oskar that ultimately led me to never return. It has been almost 2 years I still live in the neighborhood but will never go back. I DO go to chez lola. The food is better and everyone is so nice there. I don't care what you say about it being a relaxed neighborhood restaurant I am not an uptight diner and understand that brooklyn service is not the same as manhattan. But seriously this place is THE worst service I have EVER received. I am sure people will keep going there just becuasee of its location, but there are many other nice restaurants that have opened up in the neighborhood in the past couple of years that I would suggest you go to.
- Pros: location
- Cons: service
Very disappointing

I walked into CheZ Oscar on 01/27/09 thinking it is as good as CheZ Lola, owned by the same person. Let me start by saying that the waiter/host barely said hello to me, I had to ask if there were any specials..to what he answered.."yes..but just soup"..I had a chicken caesar salad, a side order of french fries and a glass of Pinot Grigio $22.24 totally overpriced for what the salad was..they burned the chicken and the coutons, the dressing looked like chicken fat floating in some kind of oil, officially the worst salad I have ever had. The french fries were O.K. You could taste the oil a little bit too much. The only good thing was the Wine, they carry a great selection. The tables are not stable, you will have to tell the wait staff to put a cork underneath it
crab cakes...ohmigod!

I love this place! This is the place to relax and chill and listen to great music (live or otherwise)...I agree that the servers can take a lil while to get to get to the table but the food and drinks are incredible and the servers are really intelligent and fun to talk to about the neighborhood and the world. I especially love Jason's margaritas and Alex's Ipod! And if you are a crabcake conssiuer...oh my God! I go back again and again and I don't mind waiting cuz' brooklyn is all about chilling...and honestly ask and ye shall receive...it's not manhattan so it doesn't come right away, but they are slammed all the time, what d you expect?!Chill...it's brooklyn people!
- Pros: Great outside seating, smart staff
- Cons: slow kitchen
