The Scene
Every time another loud, bouncy Mexican tune kicks in on the corner jukebox, you'd swear this small diner is on the brink of a full-on fiesta. But the crowd occupying these wobbly wood tables--a mix of Myrtle Street locals and artsy Pratt students--is here for the food, not the scene. The lack of decor in the front and back rooms focuses all attention on the crowded open kitchen and its wraparound counter, lined with devotees.
The Food
Castro's is the real thing: inexpensive, unfussy Mexican cooking served on paper plates with endless chips and salsa. Entrees, like quartered chicken plucked from a warmer and sauteed with rich mole, are massive, and all arrive with stacked tortillas, black beans, rice and guacamole. Mix-and-match a meal from husk-wrapped tamales, tacos, gooey rellanos and salad-heavy tostados, or go straight to the mother lode: five-pound burritos, stuffed with everything from shrimp to steak.

Recently, we ordered from Castro's. It took them over 2 hours to deliver our food. They were unapologetic and unhelpful. There excuse was that they had "two big tables" to serve. It was without a doubt the single worst experience I have had with a restaurant in my 6 years of living and eating in Brooklyn. The food is not worth it. Avoid at all costs.

I am so irritated with Castro's every time I order from them. I have vowed on several occasions never to go back, but they are the nearest and cheapest Mexican food restaurant. My roommate and I just had a late night craving for some chips, guacamole and a cheese quesadilla. When the delivery person arrived, our bill was $15.15. Excuse me? I asked to speak to somebody at the restaurant who told me I had (unwillingly) ordered a large chip and a large guacamole and proceeded to give me this huge attitude about how "everybody knows when you order chips and guacamole, the chips are going to cost money". I'm sorry, I'm not going to pay nearly $10 for chips out of a bag and mediocre at best guacamole. Instead of trying to be helpful, she talked down to me and made me feel like an idiot. I let her know she has lost my business for good and she laughed at me. Thanks. Anyways, I'd advise you update the menu here. A plain quesadilla is not $1.00, it is $4.50. Chips are not $3, they are $5. And I'd advise all of you to take your business elsewhere. Bonita is delicious AND polite.

As a Mexican born and raised world traveler, I know that it is not easy to find the real thing when it comes to food that is fresh, clean, delicious, authentic, and served by friendly and modest people. The place was rated best by cityguide a few times, and it has gotten even better. The place has gone through a beautiful remodeling, the kitchen is as efficient as can be, and the clientele is low key, friendly, and this truly family restaurant is a joy to eat and spend some time in, in a genuine environment. Try it, and you'll be wanting to thank me.
