good food, good service. We enjoyed our visit to the restaurant a lot.

The wait staff was very courteous and accomodating and the food was quite good.

We highly recommend the chicken with squash filling inside. Atmosphere is relaxing & pleasant.

The best meal of my life.. In my life, I have had many fine meals. I consider myself a connoisseur of most things foodie. But last night, I realized I had never truly experienced a meal before. For my anniversary my girlfriend and I went to Saul in Boreum Hill. Dinner started off with a lively discussion with our waiter about tannins and types of bodies and bouquets of wine, and finally we decided on a lovely Post Scriptum Douro. As we began, we were surprised with a divine peach gaspacho. It had a nice kick to it, but perfectly smooth, with a hint of basil. The we shared the Duck Confit appetizer with grits and wilted greens. The meat so so tender it practically melted on my tongue! My girlfriend then ordered the lamb special, a pan seared leg of lamb and a grilled lamb chop. It was served over a pea puree with grilled ramps and roasted fingerling potatoes. It was some of the best lamb either of us have ever tasted. I ordered the chicken special, which was a buttermilk sou vie chicken breast served on top of an herbed garlic potato puree with wild mushrooms and some sort of greens. This was the star of the entrees. It was perfectly tender and juicy, with a hint of spiciness from the garlic in the potatoes. I barely ever order chicken out, but this was an awe inspiring dish. We then ordered the rhubarb tart and the baked Alaska for dessert. The rhubarb tart was, well, tart. It paled in comparison to the baked Alaska. It was perfectly warm and crisp on the outside, with perfectly softened ice cream on the inside, with a decadent chocolate cookie on the bottom, served with a smoky caramel sauce. Upon my first bite all I could say to my girlfriend was "eat this now." It was so good, so unbelievably delicious, we even ordered a second one! All in all this was the best dining experience I have ever had. The wait staff were knowledgeable and available without being pretentious or over bearing. The setting was small enough to be intimate but big enough to feel comfortable.

worst birthday ever at Saul. I had the most unpleasant experience I can ever recall having? anywhere? at Saul in Brooklyn on Saturday night. After having made a reservation weeks ago for six people to celebrate my birthday, a seventh person was added to our party at the last minute. (A friend?s husband whose work suddenly freed him up.) And rather than squeeze another chair in at our table for six, we were summarily turned away.

I have no experience whatsoever in the restaurant business, but I have an idea of the amount of logistical juggling must take place in such an operation. I appreciate that. However, no matter how unforgiving the seating (the place was half empty when we arrived), I was shocked that given the choice between pulling up an extra chair or not, the manager chose to turn me away, leave me to wander down Smith Street ON MY BIRTHDAY with six of my friends in search of last minute accommodation, upset, disappointed, and very near tearful, and leave all of us with an astoundingly negative impression of Saul. I can't imagine anything would be worth that for a restaurant.

Even one of their own diners who was outside having a cigarette was more sympathetic than any one of Saul?s staff; she gave me a sad "happy birthday" as she went back inside to finish her meal. She seemed as stunned as we were at our poor reception. Personally, my jaw still drops when I think of how the situation was managed.

One last note: whoever did take my reservation originally was extremely nice. Maybe because we were a party of six, he made a point of asking "Is this a special occasion?" I imagined this implied we would have a special evening; unfortunately it only made the terrible treatment on Saturday sting that much more. Worst. Birthday. Ever.

I can recommend any number of outstanding restaurants in Brooklyn that will be happy to serve you graciously. Saul is not one of them.
