Not accommodating – The clerk had been helpful before; I got the jump start on a great cat book for my granddaughter. So today there was no customer service; the clerk behind the register just stayed there. Didn't interact with the customers or the very many delightful children. Bought my book and then left. Somehow a block away the book was gone. I asked for a discount on a replacement.
The manager later called with the information that no books were found in the store. They had just what they were supposed to have. I'm just out of luck--no discount on another copy was offered. Perhaps the book slid out of the bag and disappeared. They would have had a lifelong customer had they had offered to let me buy it at cost. Next time I'll be more careful.
The best book store – When I go in I always come out with a book, or two. I can't say much, but I really love this place. They also support the neighborhood, which is always good.
A bookshop-lovers' bookshop. – The Scene
Well-stocked and brightly lit with the occasional
chair for lounging and a separate children's book room for the young set, this is a place you can stay for hours and still feel welcome. The two-story store has three help desks (two upstairs and one down), and the employees who work at them are intelligent and eager to help. The store hosts weekly readings, usually with top-tier writers, and features local writers in a separate section devoted entirely to their works.
Literary fiction and non-fiction are the mainstays here, though there is a small poetry section, too. The children's book room offers a wide selection of both new and classic titles. An area of the store is devoted to local interests, which include everything from guidebooks for weekend excursions in the tri-state area to literary works about New York
City. The gardening, crafts, art, pet-care and self-help sections are smaller, and not particularly inspired, but the travel section is exceptional, as is the area of the store devoted to bringing up baby.
Greeat local indie bookstore – A well-stocked, pleasant, if somewhat bland independent bookstore, that seems to be holding its own against the encroaching B&N just across Atlantic Avenue. They have a great fiction section, and a very well stocked local section, especially focussing on Brooklyn. The Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. They'll special order anything you can't find in the store. There are also frequent author readings and events in the store.
