Editorial Review for Last Exit – by Lisa Marie Rovito
The Scene
Scads of young and not-so-young Brooklynites from nearby Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and Fort Greene hop a train, even a bus, come here. This enticingly kitschy, pleasantly uncontrived bar (named for the Hubert Selby novel) also captures curious passers-by like a starving, slightly sinister Venus's-flytrap. A haphazard string of lights in the window, mismatched couches in back, provocative artwork and a crowd that feels like a party on the edge combine to pull in all sorts and mix them up like one of the bar's fruit-fangled martinis.
The Draw
In a rare show of true community, regulars approach newcomers, agile bartenders take care of their patron kin and, under the hypnotic glow of red lightbulbs, most can't fathom leaving once they've settled in. (Probably wise, as there are few alternatives in the area.) Infectious, slightly nostalgic music heightens the David Lynch-esque undercurrent.

Insider Tips
Look GoodAsk to see the martini list, but resist the more bizarre combinations.
What to DrinkThe North Pole is a frosty concoction of vodka, creme de cacao and milk, with a candy cane garnish providing a swirl of peppermint flavor.

I was visiting NYC from Austin and had been told "you should go to Brooklyn." Not at all sure where to go my friend and I stumbled upon Atlantic Ave. and went to several bars. We both really loved Last Exit. The mood is very chill, with its red lighting and local art on the wall. The bartender had her dog in there for awhile, which I loved. The cocktails had creative election-themed names which made me laugh. The music was loud enough to create an ambiance, but quiet enough you could still carry on a conversation with the person next to you. Good for just two people but also has seating for larger groups. I recommend it!
Pros: Ambience, creative drinks/cocktails, relaxed
Cons: bathrooms a bit dirty, but to be expected i suppose

Easy-going atmosphere and ability to bring your own food make the Last Exit a great place to relax after work. And Monday night trivia is a real treat - there is an entry fee but you win a cash prize. Drinks can get pricey though.
Pros: easy-going
Cons: drink prices have gone up
