Ironically decent mexican, excellent for delivery , bad for eating in. Ironic because the service is a deceptively terrible impression of its decent cooking. You know how there are restaurants where everything but the food is a bad experience? I have one word: delivery. I just love food too much to give it all up, especially when this is (by far and relatively speaking) the best Mexican food in this area. I really enjoyed my last order of the #22 (3 enchiladas tricolor) and the actually amazing chicken soup.
NO GRACIAS!. I went with my boyfriend the other night when I was feeling down and really needed a nice dinner. We were greeted nicely only to be left seated for 15 minutes without any attention!!! HELLO, we need our drinks! So finally, can you believe it, I had to GET UP to look for a waiter. Typically we would've already walked out but I was SO exhausted that night, I said let's give it another chance. So the waiter finally came to our table and was really awkward. I don't know what he was speaking, me and my boyfriend both speak Spanish and wasn't very friendly. That's irritating. So when we got our plates, we noticed that they don't give you any lettuce or tomato or anything other than beans and cheese. At least it tasted somewhat decent, but the whole experience was disappointing. Can you believe they charged me for a side dish of iceberg lettuce? ridiculous!!! NO GRACIAS, I'm not going back.
Fly favored Iced Tea?!?.
After fiending for Mexican food, my boyfriend and I decided to go to Mexicali. We went there a couple of years ago and while the food wasn't memorable, it wasn't disgusting and it would satisfy my craving for Mexican - or so I thought...
Unfortunately, our dining experience left much to be desired. Our waiter barely spoke english and he didn't understand my questions re: a particular dish, the presentation of the food was minimal and sloppy (esp. the cheese quesadillas where there was more cheese on the plate than anything), and after a couple of sips, my boyfriend noticed a fly in his iced tea!!! Although the tea was replaced, we were still charged $5.
I was so annoyed by the service that I didn't even complain.
Like other reviewers have mentioned, the food here is wayyy overpriced considering the decor, ambience, service and the Food (which isn't that flavorful). Next time, I will check citysearch before venturing out on my own.
Mediocre. The food didn't have very much flavor. The taco only had shredded lettuce and chicken, no tomatoes, cheese... very disappointed. More expensive than the other great mexican rest. in the area. Won't be going back...
Great customer service. I have been to a lot of Mexican restaurants in many different cities, but this one is by far the cleanest! The restaurant gives you a good feeling for great food. The Margaritas are fantastic. Try it out if you are in the area!
Best Mexican restaurant in downtown Brooklyn. There are at least 10 Mexican restaurants within a mile of Borough Hall, but the New Mexicali is by far the best. They moved to a new spot on Court Street a few months ago that is much cleaner and larger. The food is phenomenal, particularly any of the sauces (mole, verde, al pipian) on the enchiladas. The owners are incredibly nice too, comping pitchers of margaritas if you sit there and eat for a couple of hours.
