Brooklyn >Montero's Bar & Grill
“best dive bar!”
“authentic old longshoreman bar, filled with grizzled old-timers.”
A Gem. Even if you don't live nearby, this place is worth the cab ride (especially on Fridays when they have Karaoke night). It's a family-run business with a lot of history and the family that runs it is terrific. If you are lucky enough to pop in at the right time, they literally feed you and refuse to charge for the food. It's also a good place to play pool.
best dive bar!. this place is cool. really cool. authentic old longshoreman bar, filled with grizzled old-timers. perfect place for a shot of bourbon and a Bud (they have the little bottles),
Into the drink, indeed..
Situated just a block or two from the water, Montero's has a nautical theme that recalls its past as a hangout for merchant marines. Life preservers hang over the bar, model ships occupy various nooks and crannies, and a sign proclaims, "If the Captain ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." But there aren't too many sailors around these days; instead, serious drinkers ponder such questions as "What's the plural of O Solo Mio?" over $3 bottles of Bud while rubbing elbows with neighborhood hipsters who stop in for a dose of authenticity.
The pool table beckons from the back area of the bar, so have your quarters at the ready. If one of the local sharks is there, it may well be a while before you get your chance at the table. But there's always sports on TV and great old photos on the walls to hold your interest.
