The Scene
Situated just a block or two from the water, Montero's has a nautical theme that recalls its past as a hangout for merchant marines. Life preservers hang over the bar, model ships occupy various nooks and crannies, and a sign proclaims, "If the Captain ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." But there aren't too many sailors around these days; instead, serious drinkers ponder such questions as "What's the plural of O Solo Mio?" over $3 bottles of Bud while rubbing elbows with neighborhood hipsters who stop in for a dose of authenticity.
The Games
The pool table beckons from the back area of the bar, so have your quarters at the ready. If one of the local sharks is there, it may well be a while before you get your chance at the table. But there's always sports on TV and great old photos on the walls to hold your interest.

A dive bar in all senses of the term Montero's has been in existence since the 1947, enduring for a number of years as a longshoreman's lounge. Grim, yes, but in a welcoming way. Across the street from Long Island College Hospital, providing some liquid relief for grieving vistors. All of the bartenders seem to be named Liz.
