Editorial Review for David Ryan Salon – by Lynn Suhrie
In Short
Neighborhood customers wait their turn on wine-colored velvet settees surrounded by gold and exposed brick walls, then accompany their hair dresser to one of the styling stations sprinkled around the room (on either side of back-to-back gilded mirrors). Hair color is the specialty here, but cuts and perms--including the gentler aromatherapy waves which aren't as harsh-smelling--are also popular. A scalp massage is an extra bonus with any shampooing session.

I've been to several salons in my 7 years in New York, and David Ryan is far and away the best. As previous reviewers have noted, it's not the cheapest, but the quality and consistency of service is second to none. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for excellent cuts and color at a decent (for NYC) price. Here are the reasons why: 1). No Pretentious atmosphere - Unlike the other salons I used to go to, David Ryan is relaxed and not snobby in the least bit. I can walk in wearing track pants and a t-shirt and feel welcomed and special. One salon I used to go to had a euro-trash snobby manager that would prance around, sniff and micro-manage the stylists....it created a tense, cold environment. There's none of that nonsense at David Ryan. 2). Superior Stylists - Veronica has been doing my cut and highlights for a year and a half and is the best hair stylist I've ever encountered. She has a fantastic eye and will make you look fabulous. No one else has ever given me a more natural, healthy looking blond than Veronica. I've been to stylists charging twice as much and no one has come close to doing color as well. 3). Prices that don't keep going up - The last salon I went to kept charging me more and more every visit. They would do an extra treatment without telling me that it would cost extra (like a $50 special color conditioner) and then I'd be shocked when seeing the bill. They'd also constantly be pushing me to buy their overpriced products. My bill has always been the same at David Ryan, and they've NEVER tried to sell me something unless I specifically asked for a product.
Pros: Best Color Ever from ANY salon
Cons: Not cheap, Must book at least a couple weeks in advance for favorite stylist

After consulting me about what I would like to have done, the stylist completely disregarded everything I said and cut my hair much shorter than I requested and with horrible uneven layers. I have very straight hair and the layers looked so terrible that I had to wear my hair pulled back every day. It took about 3 to 4 months for me to even be able to wear my hear down again. The next time I went to get my hair cut the stylist could not believe how choppy and uneven my hair was. I would not trust David Ryan Salon.
