Good Customer Service, but not so great experience

by brookecgardner at Citysearch

Apparently New York hotels and I just don't get along. I booked a room at the Affinia Manhattan Hotel for a last minute business trip to New York (the W's rates were over $700! Yikes).

Here are some of the disaster highlights:

1. Check-In: Upon arrival I was told that my reservation had been cancelled!

2. Room decor: Convalescent home-like...cherry stained & lacquered furniture and art work you wouldn't put out in a yard sale.

3. Business center: An elementary school would be more sophisticated...one computer that could actually take a dvd or cdr.

4. Wake-up Call: Button on the phone didn't actually connect you to anyone who could take wake-up call requests...when I finally did get the request in it was 15 minutes late on delivery...thankfully the street noise woke me up on time.

To be fair, I have to say that the staff was extraordinarily nice and helpful. Whenever there was even the slightest snag they jumped right in to fix the problem. Not a bad place if you are traveling with kids. While it's not fancy, the rooms are huge...small apartments actually and the rates are reasonable (around $280/night). Also, the food in the bar was surprisingly tasty.

It totally could have been worse, I could have been at the Dream Hotel.

Picky-Chick

"While some simply allow for a mediocre existence, us "picky chicks" of the world are getting exactly what we want!"

  • Pros: Super friendly staff, decent bar, large rooms
  • Cons: Outdated, mistakes with reservation and phone system, poor business center, across from Madison Square Garden - could be a pro for some

Great central location!

The Southgate Tower Hotel is in a great Manhattan location. You are just steps away from MSG and Penn Station as well as 11 blocks from 7th Ave and 42nd St (Times Square). The hotel staff was friendly and courteous and got us into a room well before their check-in time (we arrived red-eye from California). Rooms are well appointed, clean with comfortable beds (we had a good-nights sleep the whole week we were there). Their Concierge's are knowledgable, helpful and friendly, and I hope ours is there the next time we go. You won't be disappointed.

  • Pros: comfort, quality, service
  • Cons: none

Outstanding Hotel!!

by bevwlr at Citysearch

I have visited New York many times in the past 15 years. This is by far THE BEST hotel I've ever stayed in. The rooms are very nice. Our room had 2 double beds. There was a kitchen (yes a real kitchen! Small but more than adequate), a dining area and a nice comfortable spot to curl up on the couch and watch TV. The bathroom was small, but very nice. If someone wants to sleep and another person wants to stay up to read or watch TV there is adequate space to do this. The hotel is down one block & across the street from Madison Square Garden and your on in the fashion district..great shopping! The area was very safe and close to everything! Perfect place to stay with a family (especially with the fully equiped kitchen).

  • Pros: Spacious & Pristine, Very Comforable Beds, Great Staff & Restera
  • Cons: There are NO cons!
