Citysearch Editorial Review. Cheap shots of whiskey and canned domestic swill are still the key to Williamsburg's heart, but even the most PBR-dependent degenerate needs a big-boy drink every once in a while. The Counting Room specializes in just that, with a wine bar focusing on naturally produced old world vintages upstairs, and a--forgive the term--mixology bar downstairs. The space is large, spare and industrial, and the upstairs has a wall of windows that roll-up, garage-door-style, so on warm nights it’s quasi-outdoors. Downstairs, however, is the main event: Equipped with everything from house-made bitters to pomegranate molasses to all manner of herbs and fruit, it's helmed by cocktail alchemists from Cure in New Orleans, Violet Hour in Chicago and Craft in New York. The solid cocktail menu changes weekly, but your best bet is to go with bartender's choice. Just choose your preferred spirit and flavors and let them go to work--they're that good.
