The Frankie's Spuntino guys made their name with Italian-American restaurants, but this effort, a German-American style steakhouse, may be even better. Stark and unadorned, with a great cured meat program and big, delicious steaks, it also boasts a small specialty grocery on the side.
Everything here is delicious – From the cocktails to the biscuits to the steak, everything I have had here for both brunch and dinner has been superb. Also, a great burger here made with dry-aged steak. This quaint restaurant might catch some flack for its farmhouse vibe, but I think it is done elegantly. If you care about quality food and drink, you will not be disappointed.
Shame on you Prime Meats on 465 Court St. in Carroll Gardens – On Sunday June 27th we took our 65 year old German mother out for her birthday dinner. We arrived at Prime Meats at 5 PM, when the fashionably dreary restaurant was practically empty. My mother asked for the table for four and said my sister and her husband were about to join us in 10 minutes.
The kurt response to me from the basketball player size hostess/waitress in her twenties was: “We do not sit the incomplete parties. You and your petite mother can have a drink at our high bar with no stools located in a very cramped front room while you wait for the rest of the party." The second sentence is slightly embellished to illustrate the sheer nonsense of her offer but you get the gist.
The restaurants staff unbelievable ignorance in the PR area annihilated all our good will towards the spot, so we left and had a delicious diner in cheerfully decorated, innovative and friendly Miriam on 5th Avenue in Park Slope. We hope that Prime Meats management is reading the reviews. We are in the restaurant industry, so we know what we are talking about. We are also big spenders when we go out to check other establishments. This is our first negative review posted on the web. Shame on you Prime Meats for failing the Hospitality 101! Scott.
Fantastic cocktails – I've never had the food but the cocktails were great. A little too hipsterish. I wish they would have some more seating.
Um, really?! – I have been to Prime Meats about 5-6 times and always brought approx 4-6 people with me each time. I live in Carroll Gardens and want to support local business as much as I can. That said the other times I have gone were not Sunday brunch, but actually odd eating times, so have not had such a problem eating/being sat. But my last experience will be my last because it was just so retarded. I came in to eat with 5 people and was informed that the wait would be 30-45 min. No problem. We stood at the bar and had our drinks to wait for our table. There was a 5 top right next to the door and had two people in it eating their brunch who finished about 20 minutes after we arrived. The hostess then sat two 2 tops there while we still waited at the bar. Please keep in mind this place is tiny. Over the next hour and 20 min of waiting I counted five 2 tops that opened up and were sat, their only other 5 top was still seating and ordered another round of drinks. I understand all that, but why would a hostess knowing she had only two 5 tops seat deuces at one of them leaving a 5 people waiting at the bar for 35 minutes OVER the 45 min wait time. Oh, and when they finally were trying to get the two people out of the booth, the check was dropped leisurely and sat with the credit cards to be ran in payment for another 15 minutes!! Then the hostess came back to us 4 times to tell us why were wrong in being annoyed by the wait. No manager came to sort it out or apologize even though I saw them sitting out front hanging out. Pluses are that the food is good, but the place is tiny. Don't try and bring more than 2 people there if its normal eating hours or god forbid brunch. They made sure to loose my business.
everything was great... except the service – had early week lunch at prime meats. it was my first time there. a friend had told me to stop by for a steak and a cocktail. steak was tasty, not gonna lie. but there was one server doing everything from coffee to bussing and the place was really busy. he barely came over to the table at all. basically, he was completely disgusting looking like he'd just gotten out of bed and smelled so strong of beer or bourbon or something that my girlfriend had to go to the bathroom more than once to get away from it. we had to flag the guy down to get our check and saw him drinking a few times at the bar. not sure if that's what this place is all about or whatever but i'm over it. a friend of mine writes restaurant reviews and went in later in the week and said the same thing. we probably won't be back.
A one-stop summit of certified-cool, excruciatingly sourced meat, coffee, groceries and cocktails, from the guys behind Frankie's 457. – The Brooklyn hipster gourmet movement may have reached its apex with this multi-purpose temple to cool foods in Carroll Gardens, from the guys behind the Frankie's Spuntino restaurants. An excruciatingly old-timey space consisting of a tap room, a restaurant and a small retail area (where you can buy the ostentatiously local sundries and meats) features ancient wood furniture, antique punch bowls and chandeliers. The food also reaches for an old-time simplicity; one of the owners describes the effort as trying to recreate the food of the mid-nineteenth century. Between the menu, the cocktails and the adoration of its neighborhood loyalists, expect Prime Meats to be jammed night and day.
