Romantic, Shanghai-styled Dumbo speakeasy with a 1920s vibe.. This Brooklyn Lounge seems misplaced: Not only is it located in Dumbo, which isn’t exactly nightlife central, but it's also situated in the basement of Rice, a pan-Asian chain restaurant. Still, the lounge is impeccable both in terms of its exotic cocktails and Prohibition-era feel. Expert bartenders mix specialty drinks (like the green tea martini and a top-notch Dark and Stormy) with precision thanks to an extensive knowledge of the bar's stock of fine liquor, which includes an impressive selection of whiskies. Dim candlelight, deep ocher walls, low tables, birdcages, Sepia-toned photos and Asian antiques lend the basement an opium den-meets-speakeasy vibe, while several dark, secluded nooks make Speak Low perfect for nuzzling with a romantic date--or better yet, having an illicit affair.
