Editorial Review by Josh Ozersky. For years Defonte’s was a Red Hook secret--if you hadn’t had its legendary roast beef, mozzarella and eggplant sandwich, you weren’t really a local. The internet helped put an end to that, but this bare-bones deli, which lacks even a chair to sit down on, still produces some of the best sandwiches in town. The aggressive banter from the guys behind the counter only adds to the experience.

Old school amazing nostalgic sandwich shop. Can't believe I'm the first to write a review. C'mon guys, this place has been around for well over a half a century (maybe 100 years??). It's a Brooklyn institution. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more traction on Citysearch. Granted it's off the beaten path for most of you, but if you're in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn during business hours (they close at 4pm), you gatta stop at DeFonte's for an amazingly delicious, juicy, mouthwatering hefty "blue collar" sandwich that will have you coming back for more, again and again. It's a tad overpriced, but their "small" sandwich should fill you up, so the value is actually good. If you're a really big eater, get their foot-long hero (easily good for two normal mortals). Worth the trip! I'll certainly be back!
