Transformed Me In More Ways Than One!!.
Sanctuary Salon, a relatively new addition to the Boreum Hill area (v. close to Park Slope) on Atlantic Ave is a small, quaint "boutique" salon that resembles of uber-hot salons on the city but without the attitude or the ridiculous prices. The staff is awesome!! Not only are they all super friendly and accommodating but they REALLY know hair, especially Melissa, stylist that I have been to about 5 times now.
When I first went to Sanctuary, my hair was a total wreck...Due to a thyroid problem, I had to go on medication for about a year and it COMPLETELY destroyed my hair. I went from having pretty healthy hair (albeit thick and curly but healthy) that I highlighted often to quickly having the MOST ultra dry, brittle, coarse hair that was so unbelievably unmanageable, I really was at my wit’s end with it. I had tried a few salons prior to going to Melissa, specifically the unbelievable OVERPRICED and OVERATED Quidad in the city. I had all sorts of treatments done and spent all of my money on products. But..to no avail..Nothing worked on my poor over-stressed locks. Believe it or not, my hair was really becoming a huge problem in my life as it made me self-conscious and of course, made me feel about as attractive as an 80 year old, toothless bag lady. And it was really worrying me. It was wrecking havoc in more ways than I could of ever imagined.
So, when Sanctuary opened its doors, I was there immediately as there is a major shortage of good salons in downtown Brooklyn. II was embarrassed by the state of my hair and basically in tears when I got there that day. But as soon as I walked in the door, all that anxiety went right out the door. I was greeted by a super duper, exuberant and friendly receptionist and Melissa, my stylist, a very happy, go lucky, also super friendly person by nature. May sound corny, but her warm smile and demeanor immediately put me at ease and most importantly, freed me to get over the insecurities and tell everything about the state of my hair and health at the time.
Instead of quickly looking at a few pieces with a horrified look on her face and saying, " Girl, you’ve got some seriously damaged hair" and then pushing me to be washed. Melissa LISTENED to me, analyzed a few strands, AND, then assessed what exactly was happening with my hair. She explained to me IN DETAIL the structure of a hair strand, how the condition of the scalp plays such a vital role in the health of your hair and of course, the causes (besides the medication) of what was ruining my hair. She then suggested a "treatment" plan in DETAIL. She told me how to deal with it while in recovery mode, how to style it, what to stay away from (products with any trace of alcohol esp!!), what salon services I would benefit from recommended products I should use that were NOT sold at the salon. All while maintaining a happy, optimistic attitude that ensured me that there was light at the end of the tunnel. But Melissa is definitely not a " fake, tell clients what will make them happy” kind of stylist. She did tell me my hair was in pretty bad shape and that it could be a long way until I was back to my normal hair. She even banned me from getting highlights saying they weren’t allowed for another 6 months, MINIMUM!!!
It’s only been about 4 months but my hair is SOOO much healthier and I'm much happier. Now, I can’t wait to see how my highlights look in exactly 2 months from now!!
Melissa is a great stylist and gives the BEST haircuts as well. She is also like a “ hair scientist”. This woman KNOWS her craft, inside and out!!! Trust me, go to Melissa!
Loving Levi In The New Space. I absolutely love Levi and The Sanctuary Salon. It's an extreme pleasure to have such a place within the vicinity of my residence. I have been seeing Levi for a while at his previous location in Park Slope and must admit that I was initially apprehensive to the change in location but when I booked an appointment with him at The Sanctuary I felt totally at ease and intrigued from the time my call was received by the receptionist. The person that answered the phone possessed a warm and inviting voice that was certainly befitting of the salon's name. When I arrived for my service I was greeted at the door by the Nail Technician and offered a refreshment. She was so very beautiful and graceful. I had arrived a bit early so I decided to have a cup of tea and have a manicure. Not only was Missoni a pleasure to sit with through the service but my nails have never looked so beautiful while at the same time looking natural and sophisticated. I've been using a fast paced nail salon in Manhattan near my job for years and was okay with having my nails done on my lunch break and after work but from now on I will be looking forward to nail services provided by Missoni. There was another lady having a pedicure at the time and Missoni made us feel like she was servicing us right in her living room. The three of us had a great conversation and the level of comfort was unprecedented. I was ushered over to Levi after my nail service and had to tell him how happy I was to have my cut and style with him in such a salon. I've been seeing him for two years now and am always happy to receive my hair services from him -cut/color/blowdry- but it is really great to see him a part of such an amazing team in such a welcoming environment. There were also two other hair dressers there when I arrived (a young lady and a young man) and they too greeted me at some point between the time I arrived and the time I left the salon. They too seem very knowledgeable and talented and both of their clients left the salon with smiles on their faces. It is so nice to have such a quality beauty establishment in the area. In the past I have had to venture into Manhattan to experience such "full" service. I am so very happy that I decided to follow Levi to The Sanctuary and I am so happy that I stopped by for my after work hair-doo. I got so much more than I expected and by the time I made it home I felt totally relaxed and looking forward to the following day. I am so happy that I followed Levi to The Sanctuary Salon and highly recommend the place to any interested in having extremely quality service at reasonable rates so close to home.
Great highlights!. I decided to try Sanctuary Salon after reading good reviews online. I had an excellent experience here. Everyone was really nice and my highlights look great! Ariel did my hair and he was very thorough and really listened and understood what I wanted. I had been to several salons looking for the right shade of blonde for my hair and he nailed it! I'll definitely be going back!
levi was amazing...I have long thick wavey hair and when ever i go to a stylist they always want to chop off my hair..Levi listened and gave me a great haircut..He kept the length and gave it some shape so i can go natural or straight. Plus he gave me an amazing blowout which usually takes over a hour for them to do and he did it in a half hour....
he made me so comfortable and we laughed the whole time...
cant wait to go back for highlights...
he is a bonus to this beautiful salon....
Ooh where, ooh where has Jenni gone... This place is cute. But I miss my stylist Jenni. The best colorest I ever had. She has moved to Shampoo Avenue B in the Lower East Side. She really knows what she is doing and takes her time. Totally worth the trip.
Beautiful space, wonderful stylists!.
I visited The Sanctuary Salon for the first time today based on the great reviews I have seen. I was greeted by a lovely receptionist who took my coat and asked if I wanted a beverage. I had an appointment with Malcolm for a wash and cut. He was ready for me ON TIME (not the typical hour or more wait I usually encounter at other salons). He began by evaluating my badly damaged relaxed hair, asked me what I wanted him to do, then showed me how much he would cut and how he would style it. When he was done, my hair felt like silk, had incredible shine and the cut was unbelievable - all for about $75. He also took the time to teach me how to duplicate what he did when I got home. The other stylists' clients all left looking gorgeous as well so these people really know what they're doing.
As for the space itself, it really is sophisticated, clean and modern. There is a garden out back which must be heavenly during the warmer months. The friendly and nurturing interaction between the staff was also very refreshing to see. They enjoy each other's company and have a good time without being loud or unprofessional. I didn't know such a thing could exist! They supposedly offer a complimentary makeup application, but no one mentioned it. The owner, who does the makeup, was working her magic on a bride to be and, I must say, the woman looked flawless when she left. Not overdone or "made up" - just, well, natural and beautiful. Which is what makeup is really supposed to do for you anyway.
I was pleasantly surprised to find this gem so close to home. If you're looking for a nice, relaxing experience to go along with a fabulous style, then this is the place.
Alright haircut, took too long. I got a haircut by Jason and it was alright. He didn't seem to know what he was doing, my hair came out very choppy. I have long black hair and you can really see where the layers are cut, they're uniform, not natural. You're also supposed to get a free massage or they refresh your make-up...uh...that wasn't even offered! He never said anything about it, and even when he was washing my hair, he didn't seem to care that I was in pain because I didn't have a towel to support my head. Also, he was sort of rude, I would try to touch my hair and he would sort of make a comment. He could work on his skills and attitude. The salon could be amazing, but they have a way to go!
Great for men too. The aveda mens products are awesome, and the stylists really understand how to cut short mens hair. Before this, I went to the same barber for 12 years - but my wife and my sister both went here, and convinced me to try it out. It was quite an upgrade. The cost of a men's cut is totally reasonable ($38 when I went) and they always treat you like royalty. They also have a big flat screen TV, but I guarantee the staff is way more entertaining.
What a salon experience should be. Sanctuary is a great addition to the neighborhood. Malcolm cut my hair (which was a nightmare of split ends) beautifully. He had a great demeanor, listening to what I had in mind and suggesting things to do to keep my hair healthy. I also came in late (on a Sunday) and he didn't rush, giving me a gorgeous blowdry to match my new style. For African American women who need a great haircut in a no-attitude, serene, fabulous environment (the Dominican salon experience is a great value, but NOT relaxing), this is it. I plan to try color next, and if I Sanctuary lives up to my first experience, I'll be hooked.
Great new salon- amazing experience all around!.
Judging by the other reviews, I'm not the only one who has discovered this wonderful new salon. Being an Aveda salon, the atmosphere is of course very minimalist and sophisticated. The prices are much better than any other of the upscale salons in the area. Most importantly- they give an amazing cut and a great style.
Despite being his last appointment on a Saturday evening, Malcolm spent several hours on my hair. I have medium/long wavy hair, and went in for a trim. Before giving me a shampoo he evaluated my hair dry and had some great ideas about how to improve on my style without taking away much length. He took his time with the cut and used techniques that I haven't seen before- with amazing results. I walked out two hours later feeling great with gorgeous movie star hair, thanks to the great cut and amazing blowout. He didn't use a bunch of product (which I appreciated), but the blowout lasted for days! Malcolm clearly gets hair, and he takes making his clients look fabulous very seriously.
