Venerable Williamsburg club and art space Galapagos is reborn, with a renewed focus on DJs and live music.. In Short When the Galapagos gang decamped to Dumbo, night crawlers and artists feared that this Williamsburg institution would meet the wrecking ball or--gasp--become condos. But Southpaw co-owner Matt Roff and Co. have instead relaunched the spacious, multi-room venue--and left it largely untouched, right down to the reflecting pool--with a focus on the eclectic programming that made Galapagos great: Burlesque, comedy, raucous bands and karaoke. Combine that with eight draft beer choices and three-buck Buds and Rolling Rocks, and it's status quo at Galapagos 2.0.
Hits: If you liked Galapagos, you'll love Public Assembly's full slate of weird and wonderful acts, as well as the affordable beers.
Misses: Arrive early in the eve or on an off night, and Public Assembly can feel oppressively huge and intimidating. It's a venue best patronized on packed nights.
