Editorial Review for The Speakeasy – by Rebecca Behan

In Short
This Fort Greene hideaway mixes Prohibition-era inspiration, neighborhood charm and lofty aspiration. Surrounded by gold drapery and a hand-painted ceiling of vines and flowers, locals perch at tables and at the long bar. The menu from "Top Chef" contestant Josie Malave offers a mix of American classics, including chicken soup, mac and cheese and a $22 rib-eye. But international ingredients assert their dominion, too: Mussels bathe in a coconut curry broth, and poached miso salmon snuggles with wasabi mashed potatoes.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

Starting at $9, the cocktails aren't the cheapest in Brooklyn, but they do set the mood. Favorites include the Wray and Nephew's Sorrell, with rum, sorrell, and ginger bitters.

Brunch

Don't miss out on the brunch-only offerings, such as acke (Jamaica's national fruit) and saltfish---a neighborhood specialty.

The Extras

The Speakeasy can be reserved for private parties of up to 100 people.

Fun Fact

Maleve once played football for the New Jersey Sharks with the restaurant's general manager (then a team coach).

User Reviews for The Speakeasy

1 Star Rating: Not Recommended

We had high hopes for this place, but it was a tremendous disappointment. My husband and I ordered Speakeasy for delivery; we were looking forward to a nice dinner together after our young baby went to bed. It was simply terrible. The muscles were not cleaned, had their beards intact, and were inedible; the salmon was WAY over cooked; the portions were ridiculously small. We immediately called to complain -- and called, and called, and called, but couldn't get anyone to pick up the phone for well over an hour (this was 8:30 on a Thursday night). Finally we gave up and cut our losses. Never again. DO NOT GO HERE. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE. Save your time and your money.

Pros: So far, no botulisim

Cons: Everything about our Speakeasy experience
