Citysearch Editorial Review.
Word is like Meg Ryan’s Upper West Side shop in "You've Got Mail"--a charming, independent bookstore trying to survive in a world overrun by Goliath chain stores. By patronizing this Greenpoint shop, then, you don't just get to browse shelves of literature in a clean, bright setting; you get to take a stand against the Man. In addition to books, there's a wide selection of fine stationery and gifts like puzzles. A bright orange wall in back marks the children's section. Although the prices at Word may not be as deeply discounted as at its chain store competitors, its neighborhood charm--and the satisfaction that comes along with supporting a local business--compensates for the minimal lack of savings.
