Great service, Fun decor, and not so flavorful food. I decided to go to Shachi's after reading bad reviews about Caracas, another arepas restaurant, but left Shachi's disappointed. The arepas were greasy and the dough just didn't taste good. My boyfriend ended up emptying the contents and eating the chicken filling alone with the rice. The biggest problem was the flavor, it was inconsistent. The things that were seasoned tasted great, but not enough food was seasoned. Also tried the empanadas, they were crispy, oil soaked and unflavorful. Finished the meal with a glass of red sangria...I guess it was okay, most people don't complain about drinks being too strong, but I like Sangria because of it's punch - like, sweet quality, which this drink lacked. It just tasted like alcohol. Overall, 1 side of rice + 3 arepas + 1 empanada + 1 glass of Sangria = $30. Definitely a steal, but when it comes to food, the most important aspect is the taste, which Shachi's just lacked. Maybe the entrees are better but the arepas and empanadas were slacking. The 1 star is for the amazing service.
Great 6ood at Great Prices. I found this place around Easter just by chance. At first I thought it was Colombian, which I just adore since I lived there. I came in not knowing what to expect. It looks like a tiny hole in the wall from the outside. I shouls mention this place is Venezuelan place, but the first thing I noticed were the immaculately bright colored walls and warm, home-like decor on the walls. I ordered the pabellon arepa, which includes shreaded beef, black beans, mozzarella cheese, and sweet plantains sandwich style. It was excellent and very filling. The other items I recommend are the sangria, both red and white, which is sweet and strong with tons of apples, oranges, and grapes poured into a large glass. The fruit juices and smoothies are awesome. Try the mora, a South American blackberry that is tangy sweet-tart and the pineapple, which is always a winner. You get a bowl of plantain chips (they are fried platains that are cut thinly and dried) that are served with garlic olive oil sauce and taste like Pringle's. I live in the Bronx and I look forward to coming back. Try it!
Williamsburg's diverse residents converge at this friendly little Latin American restaurant.. Although almost everything is excellent at this small, out-of-the-way Latin American restaurant in Williamsburg, it's the arepas that really steal the show. Everything from the pabellon (shredded beef, plaintains, black beans and cheese) to the simple jamon y queso are incredibly filling and surprisingly cheap. The colorful spot gets a healthy neighborhood mix, which would explain the soundtrack containing both Latin American pop and modern indie rock. Sangria and Mexican beers help wash the hearty fare down.
Great Sangria!. All I have to say is Wow! I went to this place tonight with a friend who lives around the block and it was great. I had one of the entrees and my friend had 2 of the arepas. We also shared the biggest pitcher of white sangria both of us have every seen. $24.00 for 8 pint size glasses! Totally and completely worth it. One of the co-owners waited on us and he was very sweet and suggested his favorites. The food was great and reasonably priced. Would for sure go back!
Best Latin American food ever!. As soon as you walk in, the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff puts you at ease. The decor is from Venezuela and Columbia set in an intimate space. The food served is all made with fresh ingredients. The chef is an expert at bring out the flavors and blend them together. Everything I had there was delicious. Plus the prices are no where near what the more trendy places charge yet the food is better than all of them. This place is awesome.
Excellent Sangria - - Great food. I have been watching this restaurant move along for the past few months and it seems like they are really hitting their stride. They started serving dinner over the summer and most everything I have tried has been great. I tried delivery to my office and it was such a nice change form the normal deli sandwich or pizza i seem to be feeding my face with everyday. Its real small but so far getting a table has not been a problem. Hopefully that will not always be the case because i hope they will be around the neighborhood for a while.
