Editorial Review for Permanent Records – by Keith Wagstaff

In Short
In the age of digital downloading, this Greenpoint record shop's anachronistic vibe is downright charming. Lazy ceiling fans whirl over a wide selection of new and used vinyl and CDs, most of the indie rock variety, although there is a decent selection of jazz and soul. The old-school environment, complete with vintage-style hanging globe lights, hardwood floors and a laid-back yet helpful staff, is almost enough to make one curse the day Steve Jobs ever started his little online music service.

Hits: This record shop has a very comfortable feeling, meaning you can find great music without all the hipster snark.

Misses: A website that listed upcoming in-store shows would help music fans plan their concert schedules.

Insider Tips

When to Go

Indie rock bands of all stripes (past performers include Brooklyn's Rocketship Park to Long Island's the Argyles) play free in-store shows every Saturday at 3pm.

The Extras

Cinephiles should check out the small selection of new and used DVDs.

Save Money

The five CDs for $10 section is your friend.

Know Before You

The store buys and trades vinyl and CDs, but owner Marjorie Eisenberg is a stickler for quality and content, so you should probably leave that scratched Nickelback CD at home.
